"Shocking!" and "Real" - Book Review of From Deep Within (Lewis)

Image
The nice thing about reading psychological thrillers is being able to read the last page and think, “That was a riveting read; thank heaven it’s only fiction!” From Deep Within is more than riveting: it’s shocking, eye-opening, often very frightening, but sadly, non-fiction.  . . .  Readers who care about people, who wonder why so many go astray while others live a good and productive lives, will gobble up the pages of this book faster than they would a psychological thriller. From Deep Within is chilling; its characters are unforgettable. More importantly, they are real: you couldn’t create more complicated characters. Susan J. Lewis shares their stories, not with a clinical distance or intellectual analysis, but with compassion and understanding. An absolutely compelling and highly recommended read. This detailed and insightful review slipped past us and should not have. Shocking! But you can read the entire 5-star review HERE now. (The review itself is worth the time invested in

Daily Excerpt: From Deep Within (Lewis): Selection from Kew Gardens - From Mental Health to Laboratory to Mental Health

Image
Excerpt from From Deep Within ; selection from Kew Gardens: The grounds of the mental health center were lovely, but the patients who wandered them seemed lost. The room was filled with groaning people and the constant leg movements of tardive dyskinesia. Most patients knew me by my first name. “Susan, are you eating with us today?” they would ask.   Then, in 1973, one of the psychiatrists at the center was shot and killed by a patient while I was in the next building. I heard the gunshot, but no one knew what had happened. As the information trickled down that someone had

Excerpt from From Deep Within (Lewis): Blackjack

Image
Blackjack   My first clinical experience was working in a state psychiatric hospital with a group of individuals who were diagnosed with schizophrenia. I was a new, inexperienced therapist. I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. On the afternoon of our first group meeting, I came to the waiting area and figured a welcome to the new patients was a good start. When in doubt, be polite! I never even finished the first sentence of my greeting. As soon as I opened my mouth they stood up in unison and walked away from me toward the meeting room. I was surprised. I ran to the front of the parade and led them to the end of the hallway. No one looked at me or said anything. They shuffled, single file, into the room we had been assigned and plopped themselves down around a circular table. The space was small and cramped. We were so close together that the body odor of some people whiffed through the room.   I hoped it might be easier to get everyone’s attention now that we were s
