A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Book Launch, One More Time

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Today's to.pic is, once again -- and briefly -- about book launches. This column has carried a number of discussions about book launches . One that was not mentioned was launching on Goodreads. Goodreads has a good planning process that can reach beyond Goodreads. Here is a link to the Goodreads recommended process in preparing a marketing timeline . Bottom line: No need to do the work of planning if someone else has done it for you -- at the least, this model can inform your thinking. Lesson for today's Tuesday talk: Book launches require planning; planning requires timelines; check out ones that work for others before going off on y

Cancer Diary: MSI Press Books on Bereavement

Image
With cancer, it does happen. Many stories do not have happy endings, and some endings come sooner than we would like. MSI Press has published several books on bereavement. Broader in scope than the experiences of those who have lost loved ones to cancer, they share many, if not most, of the emotions of those who have grieve for those medical science could not save -- and they give hope and a wide range of options of how to go on and LIVE.  Harnessing the Power of Grief (Julie Potter) get the book or ebook In this book, Julie Potter traces back decades the research on understanding and coping with grief, which she describes as a natural human response to loss. Pulling from the work of Worden, the author prescribes four tasks for those in grief to use in managing their grief. She also walks the reader through special situations like tragic loss without warning. A book for those who are grieving and those who are walking with grievers. Daily Excerpt: The Rose and the Sword (Bach and Hucknall) - Introduction

Image
excerpt from The Rose and the Sword (Bach & Hucknall) Introduction                  The popular ideal of finding one’s “soul mate” in a partner stems from the relationship between the two basic energies that exist, beyond gender and sexual identity, in each of us. We all possess a mix of these energies. When the inner feminine energy is weak and the inner masculine energy is dominant, a person loses his or her inner direction, for feminine energy is like a guiding system; without its guidance, actions can lead to unchecked aggression. When the inner masculine energy is undeveloped and the inner feminine energy is strong, swirls of inspired thought dissolve like mist, ungrounded in the action needed for manifestation. When these two energies are equally developed, the individual is richly endowed with inspiration and intuition (the feminine) as well as the ability to express these riches in the world (the masculine).              In The Rose and the Sword: How to Balance Your Fem

The Story behind A Theology for the Rest of Us (Yavelberg)

Image
From the author: For me, the "back story" must go back to when I was 8 or 10 or so.  While my father was a devout atheist, my mother was very superstitious and tried oh-so-hard to avoid evil spirits of any kind.  I then came across "King of Kings," a movie about the story of Jesus, and "Kung Fu," a tv series about a Taoist monk forced to live in exile in America's Wild West.  How he applied his Taoist values to such a different setting was intriguing to me.  Looking back, it's hard for me to believe my coming across such media was pure coincidence.  Maybe the Hindus are right that "That which you are seeking is causing you to seek."  Anyway, I never stopped thinking about such things and, finally, when I retired, I had the time and inclination to write.  Only child that I am, I am still not so narcissistic as to think this entire Covid pandemic was the Divine's way of getting me to write by making sure I had little else to do.  Neve

Daily Excerpt: The Rise and Fall of Muslim Civil Society (Imady) - Muslim Traditional Society: Forerunner of Muslim Civil Society - The Severe Trial

Image
The Severe Trial During the ninth century, the Abbasid khalifah1 al-Mamun (r. 813-833) set out to convert ahl al-sunnah, or the traditionalists who emphasized the authority of the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions, to a theological doctrine held by the Muc tazilah, or the rationalists who emphasized the authority of reason and philosophical principles. Traditionalist scholars were forced to recant their belief in the non-created nature of the Qur’an in favor of the rationalist doctrine which held that the Qur’an was a creation of God. Those who refused were tortured and, at times, executed. In 848, fifteen years after the beginning of the government sponsored inquisition, termed al-Mihnah, or the Severe Trial, by Muslim historians, al-Mutawakkil (r. 847-861) ordered the end of all government sponsored attempts to enforce the rationalist doctrine. Al-Mutawakkil’s decision reflected his awareness that the inquisition had simply not succeeded and that its continuation might well

Recommended Reading for Lent: Easter at the Mission by Sula, Parish Cat

Image
We recommend Easter for the Mission even for those who think they know all there is to know about Lent and Easter.  Sula, the now-famous church cat, tackles a mysterious topic for her fifth book: What is Easter, what is its meaning, what are the beliefs behind Catholic behaviors associated with the Lenten season and Easter, why is it called the Paschal mystery? Sula answers these questions with history, dogma, and humor. And, of course, with pictures, lots and lots of people-cat pictures. The sections of the book--Ash Wednesday, Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and East Morning--are beautifully illustrated with drawings by Uliana Yanovich. Guest Post from Dr. Dennis Ortman, MSI Press Author: Journey through Death

Image
Today's guest post from Dr. Dennis Ortman continues the theme he started last week on dying and living. Journey through Death “Unless the grain of wheat dies, it remains just a grain of wheat.” --Jesus of Nazareth   Pope Benedict XVI, the retired pope, recently died. One of his caregivers reported his last dying words: “Lord, I love you.” He was echoing the last words of Jesus on the cross: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Mahatma Gandhi, called the “Great Soul,” was assassinated. His last words were a cry to God: “Ram, Ram, Ram!” The last thought of these men before they died was not of all the loved ones they left behind, but of God, who was their constant companion throughout their lives. They faced death with a tranquil spirit. Socrates, the epitome of wisdom, faced his death with a similar calmness. He was condemned to die on a charge of corrupting the youth of Athens. His friends tried to convince him not to take that fatal drink. Socrates responded
