Daily Excerpt: Intrepid (Leaver) - Preface

Image
excerpt from  Intrepid  by Carl Leaver and Betty Lou Leaver Preface All cats are special, but occasionally one is unique—so unique that you know that this one time, this one cat’s lifetime, is the only time you will encounter such a soul. That makes every day with the cat a delightfully special day, and it makes the death of such a cat a real tragedy. The memories linger, and they are no less sharp a year, or two years, or three years later than they were when they took place. Intrepid was just such a cat for us. So many things remind of us him nearly every day: replacing a light bulb—he would always climb the step ladder to help, putting up a Christmas tree—we never could when he was around because he would eat it or any plant, and the silence of waking up in the morning—he always woke us by pushing onto the floor any moveable item he found on the bureau (and, regardless of weight, he could usually find a way to move any item there). Missing Intrepid is part of our daily life now. F

Cancer Diary: Lower Cancer Risk through Housework? Really?

Image
Well, if this isn't the darndest! Leave it to Australian researchers to even think of the hypothesis -- and test it. Yes, they found, certain amounts and kinds of housework can lower risk for certain cancers by up to a third. Well, I do not need to repeat. Read it for yourself HERE . For other Cancer Diary posts, click  HERE . Blog editor's note: As a memorial to Carl, and simply because it is truly needed, MSI Press is now hosting a web page,  Carl's Cancer Compendium , as a one-stop starting point for all things cancer, to make it easier for those with cancer to find answers to questions that can otherwise take hours to track down on the Internet and/or from professionals. The CCC is expanded and updated weekly. As part of this effort, each week, on Monday, this blog will carry an informative, cancer-related story -- and be open to guest posts:  Cancer Diary .   Sign up for the MSI Press LLC newsletter Follow MSI Press on  Twitter ,  Face Book , and  Instagram .   Interes

Where are they? MSI Press Author: Ekaterina Filatova (Understanding the People around You)

Image
MSI Press authors are located all over the world. Getting to know the authors can also mean getting to know a new part of the world. We have been sharing this information on a regular basis. MSI Press published her first and only book in English.  Katya was a professor at St. Petersburg University (formerly, Leningrad State University) in Russia. Our editor (who speaks Russian) and Katya (who did not speak English) were friends and met from time to time in "Piter" (as the Russians colloquially call the city). St. Petersburg is known for many things. One of the most beautiful cities of the world, it was the capital of Russia during the days of Peter the Great (hence, the name of the city). It is often called the Venice of Russia because of the canals throughout the city (and you do not want to be caught on th

Daily Excerpt: Individualized Study Plans for Very Advanced Students of Foreign Languages (Leaver) - Preface

Image
excerpt from Individualized Study Plans for Very Advanced Students of Foreign Languages by Betty Lou Leaver Preface Individualized Study Plans (ISPs) have been used in a number of venues for at least two decades, if not more, particularly in US government foreign-language training institutions. Sometimes these instruments have been called ISPs; other times they have been called learning plans. Whatever they have been called, the purpose has generally been the same: to assist students in organizing their short-term and long-term learning goals and activities. (In this volume, examples of ISPs and the concepts associated with them refer, for the most part, to the planning of long-term, even lifelong, foreign-language learning activities). The Foreign Service Institute has long used ISPs for its diplomats and attaches in foreign-language training during the training period itself, which could be considered an intermediate-term type of plan since the amount of time spent in languag

The Story behind the Book: Entienda el desafío del -NO- en los ninños con autismo (McNeil)

Image
From the author --  The story behind Entienda el desafío del -NO- en los niños con autismo Entienda el desafío del -NO- en los ninños con autismo is the Spanish translated version of Understanding the Challenge of, “No” for Children with Autism. The author Colette McNeil was inspired to write Understanding the Challenge of, “No” for Children with Autism in the hopes of sharing information on how making purposeful choices when speaking to children with autism can improve understanding and cooperation. In her 30 years of working with autistic children, the author has noticed that the assistance provided to parents, care givers and education staff has mostly been delivered through a series of explicit strategies to address specific instances of need. The collection of a bag full of tricks or “tool bag,” is encouraged. For example, if we want a child to learn to request a snack item we teach the specific phrase “I want cookie please.” Then if we want the child to follow a direction to wa
