  I’m not trying to win a race. I’m trying to last . I want to walk up those 17 stairs five times and feel energized , not pooped. I want to run—not just for one minute—but for many. That’s why I train. That’s why I breathe. 🫁 Breath Is the Engine of Endurance Muscles need oxygen. The heart needs rhythm. The brain needs calm. Breath delivers all three—if you train it. Here’s what I’m learning: 1. Paced Breathing for Movement Match breath to steps: Inhale for 3 steps, exhale for 3. Then try 4. Then 5. This trains your lungs to stretch and your body to sync. 2. Diaphragmatic Breathing Breathe deep into the belly, not shallow into the chest. Practice lying down: hand on belly, inhale slowly, feel it rise. This builds lung capacity and calms the nervous system. 3. Recovery Breathing After exertion, sit tall. Inhale through the nose for 4 counts. Exhale through pursed lips for 6–8 counts.   I didn’t struggle with the cardio class . It was designed for seniors, and it was gentle. I didn’t even need those big yellow weights. But here’s the truth: endurance is my weak spot . I can run a ten-minute mile—for one minute. Then I’m out of breath. I can walk up and down 17 stairs four or five times. Then I’m a little pooped. Not a lot. But I don’t want to be pooped at all . That’s why I enrolled in the class. Grandma's Ninja Warrior Diary: The Kid Beats Me

  We have a tenant downstairs in our house, and the tenant has a son. He is nine years old and treats us as his grandparents. We, in turn, treat him as a grandson. So, I was astonished that he could not pull himself up on the chin-up bar that my husband had installed in our bedroom doorway so that I could get to the point of being able to do pull-ups, lots of the them. He was very weak yet a very active boy -- we walk about a mile each night together, with him scootering (well, I guess that is really not walking) and me running along beside him. He found the light weights I lift to be very heavy. I mean, we are only talking about 20 pounds. Then, I was appalled to find out that gym is no longer part of elementary classrooms around here. Goodness, where do kids get their guidance in physical activities? So, I interested him in a competition, using the bar. Who could get to do pull-ups sooner. He pulled in a kid visiting a neighbor for two weeks and vowed to do better than t...
