A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Help! Kindle is offering my e-book for free!

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Today's topic is about Kindle Unlimited and is a response to a question (or call for help) I get from time to time from our authors: Help! Kindle is stealing my book! That is the understanding that happens when an author sees his/her book being offered for free by Kindle Unlimited. So, is Kindle stealing your book? What is really going on? Here is the answer: Readers on Kindle Unlimited pay a monthly fee and get free access to all Kindle books that receive 70% (vs 35% royalty). You actually do get paid -- if the book is read, you get payment for the number of pages read. At the lower, 35% royalty, your book would be exempt from Kindle Un...

Author in the News: Betty Lou Leaver's co-edited book earns national award

Image
Betty Lou Leaver's book, Transformative Language Learning and Teaching (see affiliate books), published by Cambridge University Press, recently received the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages book prize for Best Book in Pedagogy 2022. Leaver, Davidson, and Campbell’s  Transformative Language Learning and Teaching  is a groundbreaking volume on the theory and practice of transformative teaching in the language learning context. The world language education field has experienced many methodological upheavals corresponding to theoretical or practical paradigms over the past century. The editors of this volume distill these changes into three large patterns whose practices are based on educational philosophies the primary paradigm of which encompasses three elements: transmission, in which information flows unidirectionally from teacher to learner, resulting in rote memory, reproduction, and accuracy; (2) transaction, in which informatio...

Cancer Diary: Jimmy Carter

Image
We interrupt our series of Cancer Diary posts to share what everyone already knows: cancer ( melanoma gone wild) has the upper hand now over Jimmy Carter , former US president and NFobel Prize winner. We salute his service to so many people of the world and his many accomplishments on behalf of peace and humanity. We wish him a humane experience on hospice and a peaceful last chapter in his life. For other Cancer Diary posts, click  HERE . Blog editor's note: As a memorial to Carl, and simply because it is truly needed, MSI Press is now hosting a web page,  Carl's Cancer Compendium , as a one-stop starting point for all things cancer, to make it easier for those with cancer to find answers to questions that can otherwise take hours to track down on the Internet and/or from professionals. The web page is in its infancy but expected to expand into robustness. To that end, it is expanded and updated weekly. As part of this effort, each week, on Monday, this blog will carr...

The Story behind A Movie Lover's Search for Romance (Charnas)

Image
From Joanna Charnas, the author of A Movie Lover's Search for Romance   I found everything about Henry Cooper completely charming. Erudite and cultured, he’d written about the space program for the New Yorker Magazine. I’d encountered my father’s old high school friend when I was forty-four, during a visit to New York City for a family event, when Dad was staying with him. A few months after the trip, I confessed my thing for Henry to Dad, who was surprisingly supportive. To amuse myself, I later wrote a short essay about my crush, and read it to Dad. His response: “You should get that published.” Dad was the most intellectual person I’ve ever met. Hyper educated at Andover, Harvard, and Harvard Law, he read books on architectural theory and the collected letters of Mozart for fun. Based on my father’s enthusiasm, and trusting his judgement, I continued to write about dating and all things romantic post-divorce. These essays turned into A Movie’s Lover’s Search for Romance. ...

Daily Excerpt: The Pandemic and Hope (Ortman) - A Critical Opportunity

Image
Excerpt from The Pandemic and Hope (Ortman) -  A CRITICAL OPPORTUNITY The word “crisis” implies both danger and opportunity. The anxious mind sees only danger, what can go wrong. The wise mind glimpses opportunity and joins the battle with compassion and wisdom. We hear countless stories of people coming forth, risking their lives, to help others. So many people are responding to this tragedy with bravery, generosity, and compassion. There is a dawning awareness of our connectedness. But how far does it reach in our minds: to our community, our nation, the entire world? Will we hang on to a tribal view or open to a global consciousness? Our planet is a mere speck in the boundless, expanding universe. It is so fragile and cries out for care. It appears the epidemic will soon engulf the whole world. As our flu season ends, the time of disease will likely take hold in the southern hemisphere. We have an opportunity to extend our compassion to our southern neighbors, sharing ...
