Cancer Diary: How One Person Learned He Had a Glioblastoma

Image
Several years ago, our audio book narrator suddenly found out that he had glioblastoma. We lost him immediately to audiobook production as the tumor took over more and more of his life. He left us less than a year later. He had no warning. Or did he? The following story sheds some light on his situation through a similar situation:  “Here’s How I Knew I Had a Brain Tumor”: One Survivor’s Story After a Common Complaint Became Too Much (msn.com) For other Cancer Diary posts, click  HERE . Blog editor's note: As a memorial to Carl, and simply because it is truly needed, MSI Press is now hosting a web page,  Carl's Cancer Compendium , as a one-stop starting point for all things cancer, to make it easier for those with cancer to find answers to questions that can otherwise take hours to track down on the Internet and/or from professionals. The CCC is expanded and updated weekly. As part of this effort, each week, on Monday, this blog will carry an informative, cancer-related s...

Impressive Review of Transformative Language Learning and Teaching in Russian Language Journal

Image
Excerpt from review of Transformative Language Learning and Teaching in by Benjamin Rifkin (Farleigh Dickinson University) in Russian Language Journal --  The length parameters of this review prevent me from offering even the shallowest analysis of each of the chapters in this outstanding volume. Suffice it to say that the volume includes chapters on language learning as well as on east-west concepts of selfhood, community engagement, service learning, virtual immersion, dual immersion, engagement with migrants and refugees, technology, open-architecture curricular design, and testing and assessment, among others. I confess that I ordered this volume the moment I saw it appear in press and read it cover to cover with great interest as soon as I had it in my hands. Reading it again 204 Russian Language Journal, Vol. 72, Nos. 1-2, 2022 Reviews for the purposes of this review was just as powerful. The editors of the volume and all the contributing authors are to b...

Caturday: Getting medicine into cats

Image
Bobolink, our FIV kitty, has developed the wiles of a strong-willed old man at a nursing home. No matter how I give him his daily pills, I find them later under beds, near the litter box, or, all too frequently, on my bedspread. Pill pockets don’t work. Pill popper does not work. Mixing the pill with treats does not work. So, I stick it in his mouth with my hand. He pretends he has swallowed it, looking at me with big honest (uh, dishonest) eyes and prepped for his morning bowl of food, which he eats assiduously, as if all is normal. Then, when I move away and he thinks I am not looking, he spits the pill out in a forceful arc which lands it in any kind of unanticipated place. Our other cats are much better at swallowing their pills, but we are still looking for a solution for Bobolink. Wondering what other owners of willful cats find successful... Recently Released: Audiobook of an Afternoon's Dictation (Greenebaum)

Image
Recently released - the audiobook for An Afternoon's Dictation by Steven Greenebaum. In 1999 Steven Greenebaum felt he'd hit the wall. Fifty years old, he could not make sense of his life or the world around him. For several months he angrily demanded answers from God, if God were there. One afternoon, an inner voice told him to get a pen and paper and write. Steven then took dictation - three pages, not of commandments but guidance for leading a meaningful life. An Afternoon's Dictation grapples with, organizes, and deeply explores the revelations Steven received and then studied for over ten years. His sharing is NOT offered as the only possible way to understand it the dictation. It is offered, rather, as a start. The book's sections include deep explorations into "The Call to Interfaith," "The Call to Love One Another," "The Call to Justice," and "The Call to Community." These explorations are rooted in a crucial part of th...

From the Blog Posts of MSI Press Authors: Franki Bagdade talks about what to do when your executive functioning stops functioning

Image
So what happens when your executive functioning stops functioning? Franki Bagdade, author of  I Love My Kids, But I Don't Always Like Them , has some suggestions in her recent blog post: It was a typical Tuesday and I was balancing the needs of two businesses and three children. Juggling meeting with clients 1:1 for Therapy or ADHD coaching while using any gaps in my schedule to respond to emails, schedule social media, write blogs, and do laundry (cause there is always, always laundry to do.) This particular day I found a rare 90-minute gap between clients so I scheduled a very needed physical therapy appointment, as I was still recovering from a broken ankle. As I was going through my exercises my phone started buzzing. An email from a therapy client scrolled across my screen asking for the Zoom link for their session starting in ten minutes. Cue a racing heart and panic. I quickly looked at my calendar, a color-coded HIPPA-compliant modern marvel. There was no appointment...
