Caturday: Cats in War 8

Image
This post continues the series of Caturday posts about cats trapped in war zones. Cats are not political (nor are dogs or any other animal for that matter--nor, generally, the people caring for them, nor this post). In peace and where people watch out for them, cats enjoy being loved and learn to return love. Yet, cats (and other animals) do get find themselves struggling in war zones. They, just like people who have done nothing to bring harm to anyone else but just happen to live there, suffer the consequences of evil descending unexpectedly from sources external to them. Like people, cats and other animals suffer when they are homeless and without food or winter. And they are often completely forgotten when war (or natural disaster, for that matter -- they drown in floods and burn in fires) breaks out. Like people, they have to dodge bullets, bombs, and other dangers. Unlike people, they are often not calculated into humanitarian outreach efforts. (Ditto for dogs and other animals

Caturday - smoke in the air and what it means for pets

Image
This is just a plea, on Caturday, for pet owners who are in smoky areas caused by the recent Canadian firestorms to remember that pets, too, need protection from smoke. So, keep them inside and breathing easy with the air that you have managed to arrange for yourself to breathe safely. Here is a fact sheet that explains the effects of smoky air on your cats and dogs. It only takes a minute or two to read. Check it out HERE . See more Caturday posts   HERE . Caturday: Annoying Cat Behaviors

Image
I came across this very interesting post recently:   The most common annoying cat behaviors, explained (msn.com) . Seemed like a good topic for a Caturday. For sure, these are the kinds of things we all wish cats would not do -- scratching furniture, peeing outside the litter box, and escaping to the outdoors, among others. Good explanation and advice in the article. A couple pieces of advice missing, though, that I have found helpful for those escape artists: (1) build a catio (it is an alternative outdoors and, for most of our cats, it suffices, and (2) leash the cat and go for a walk (our Murjan was simply impelled to the outside and so loved to go for a walk that he would sit in front of the drawer with his leash and demand "mwout" over and over until he got his leash and the door opened -- and then he was off exploring. He wanted "mwout" the day before he died -- and spent his leash time looking for dark places where he could lay down for his final rest. (No, w

Caturday: Update on Animal Friends Shelter in Gaza

Image
photo from Animal Friends Shelter As most people know, the situation in Gaza is beyond-belief-horrible for both people and animals. When hunger and devastation strike, the animals are more often than not forgotten and left to survive a while with fear until they die of starvation. They are the often forgotten victims of wars, whether in the Middle East, Ukraine, or Africa.  Here is an update on the situation with the Animal Friends Shelter in northern Gaza, that has appeared in Caturday columns in the past (along with other shelters in Gaza, shelters in Israel, and animal rescue efforts in other parts of the world). For more posts about these situations, see our columns on " Cats in War ." Lack of food and hunger has become unsustainable for the families of the two brothers, Tameer and Samir, who operate the shelter. Thanks to donors, one of the families has begun the process of emigration. The other family still needs a few more donations. So do Tameer and Samir who are

Rescuing Cats from the Syrian Earthquake: Blessings and Prayers for Ernesto and His Cat Sanctuary in Sryia

Image
Running late this Caturday, but it is still Caturday in California! Briefly, then, I would like to point out that not only people were victims of the recent earthquake in Syria. So were a great many critters. Ernesto's Sanctuary for Syrian Cats in Aleppo has been working miracles taking care of abandoned and homeless cats in war-torn Syria. Now, they are helping with cat rescue following the recent devastating earthquake. And HERE is a video of cats being rescued. Note: I assume that they could use prayers, donations, and/or sharing this information as widely as possible. For more Caturday posts, click HERE . Caturday: Cats and Cancer

Image
This is not the first time we have written about cat cancer in a Caturday post. We learn more about it over time, and it seems that more in general is learned about it over time.  Blind Cat rescued share the following interesting and information post about cat cancer:  Feline Carcinoma (blindcatrescue.blogspot.com) . Cat cancer not only occurs, but at least in our household has become common as our cats have aged. Among our cats, three have died of it, and two are living with it. The breed does not seem to matter; it appears that cancer is blind to breed. Intrepid was the first to be diagnosed with cancer and the first to die with it. In his cancer, it was small cell lymphoma. He lived only a few months after diagnosis. His vet missed the cancer -- that happens with people, too. After describing Intrepid's late night howling to a friend who works at the SPCA, he gave us the name of a vet with excellent diagnostic skills. She immediately intuited the problem, scoped Intrepid, fou

Caturday: Living with Street Cats

Image
Today is one of those days -- sitting up with a rescued street cat, sitting side by side to provide warmth, and periodically adjusting the steam vaporizer to reach Happy Cat's nostrils. Happy Cat is not very happy today. Ten days ago, he snatched and swallowed a blood pressure pill my son had placed on the counter while getting a glass of water. Happy Cat is a street cat rescue; he eats anything and everything. Or did, until today. Ten days ago, we had to take him to the vet for that BP pill snatch. He had his stomach pumped and was given charcoal to deal with the poisoning. He was put on IV -- and because of a panic attack, was put on oxygen. It was a tough day. Two days later, life became tougher. He started sneezing. Then, his nose started running. In days, he had trouble breathing. Back he went to the vet. That was two days ago. Again, he was put on oxygen for his panic attack (in spite of pre-dosing him with gabapentin to lessen it). Again, he was poked and probed. He was hy
