A Publisher's Conversation with Authors -- and a Plea: Authors, Do Not Waste Your Precious Time

Image
It is Tuesday. Time to tall turkey. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Today's topic popped up because I received three book proposals that were very easy and quick to turn down. Although perhaps some editors might not have responded at all, I do like to get back to authors who submit proposals. Often, if a book is almost viable, just needs some tweaking, I might give some suggestions for improvement. (Not all authors take these suggestions kindly, but in those cases, I consider nasty responses evidence that I made the right decision in rejecting the manuscript; I would not want to work with such an author.) In today's cases, I was presented with proposals for novels. That is an easy

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Common Errors Found by Copyeditors

(photo by Frank Perez) Today is Tuesday. Today's topic is about errors typically found by copyeditors. Some of them will not be picked up by spellcheckers. Avoid these to impress acquisition editors. Word Choice. The words that you use portray a picture of you as an author. The most successful authors choose their words well. The verb to be i s not your best friend, but when you read the manuscripts of many authors who would like a publishing contract, you wonder if they know any other verbs at all. Linking verbs provide no action, no definition, no story. They just connect two nouns, making the sentence static. Replace all the link

The Story behind the Book: Communicative Focus (Shekhtman & Kupchanka)

Image
Communicative Focus  was written through collaboration of Boris Shekhtman, who had left the Foreign Service Institute to open his own highly successful private school, using language teaching techniques that were quite unique but extremely effective, and Dina Kupchanka, a young teacher who taught for him.  The realization of the principles introduced in  Communicative Focus  had appeared earlier as actual classroom exercises in several publications, a book published by Cambridge University Press ( Developing Professional-Level Foreign Language Proficiency ),  How to Improve Your Foreign Language Immediately  (an immensely popular book published by MSI Press), and articles in the Journal for Distinguished Language Studies. The theory behind these activities had never been spelled quite so explicitly before (lack of room in the previous publications to include theory). Further, it took some time before the profession was ready to move on from teaching language as linguistics and teachi

Today's book excerpt comes from  Andrew's Awesome Adventures with His ADHD Brain   by Kristin and Andrew Wilcox.  A lways D isorganized and H opelessly D istracted (ADHD)   Blink, blink, blink, the cursor keeps time on the blank screen as thoughts rush through my brain like a runaway freight train. “What was that book about? Who were the characters?” Oh, where to begin? There are just too many details to think about. My thoughts drift aimlessly as I stare out of my bedroom window. It’s a sunny day, and there is the smell of freshly cut grass pulling my attention to what I could be doing. I wish I were riding my bike or fishing down at the stream. Instead, here I am stuck at my desk, writing a dreaded book report for English class. Correction, I am not writing it. I wish I could make myself write it. If I were writing it, then I could be done with it. All I want is to be done with it. Why didn’t I start working on it when it was assigned to us weeks ago? “Ugh!” Now, it’s the
