Book Alert: Soccer Is Fun without Parents

Image
Released today! Approximately 75 percent of children who play organized sports quit by age 13. While there is no definitive answer about why, many researchers suggest that it is because of pressure from parents. One referee always likes to say that he equates kid's soccer to a musical recital. Parents don't yell instructions to their seven-year old when they are singing or playing the piano. They are not jumping up from their seats when the proper chord is struck, yelling, "Great job, Jimmy!" or "Big kick on the next chord!" Yet, they feel it is OK to do so on the soccer field. Why? This book will make every soccer parent and coach say, "I know that person." Unfortunately, sometimes they'll be talking about themselves. It's an entertaining and informative read as Peter not only tells the stories of insane, yet normal, soccer parents but delves into why and how our behavior needs to change. A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Favorite Stories from the Book Publishing Experience - the Bizarre, the Heartwarming, the Surprising

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's topic digresses -- into the absurd, perhaps. Today, I sent for the third time, ARC labels to wone of our authors. The first time the labels disappeared. The second time, they were inexplicably directed to an IRS office in another state. Totally insane! Fingers crossed for a safe arrival this time. Today's experience reminded me of other unexpected, funny, and heartwarming experiences that have occurred over the 20 years MSI Press has been publishing. Here are some of my favorite, somewhat inexplicable stories. When You're Shoved from the Right, Look to Your Left: Metaphors of Islamic Humanism is a great little book, trul

Excerpt from Weekly Soul (Craigie): Meditation #16

Image
excerpt from Weekly Soul : Meditation #16 -- An Apache myth tells of how the creator endowed human beings, the two-leggeds, with the ability to do everything—talk, run, see, and hear. But he was not satisfied until the two-leggeds could do just one thing more—laugh. And so men and women laughed and laughed and laughed. Then the creator said, “Now you are fit to live.” Larry Dossey Laughter vitalizes the soul. In the Navajo (or Diné) tradition, there is a sacred and joyful celebration of the First Laugh. When babies are born, they are understood to be part of two worlds: the Spirit world and the physical world. A baby’s first laughter, often at around three months, is a sign of their transition to being fully present in the physical world as a member of their family and community. The person who observes or elicits the first laugh… whose character is considered to be passed along to the child… is responsible for hosting an A’wee Chi’deedloh, the First Laugh ceremony. G

Book Review: 57 Steps to Happiness

Patricia Lorenz is one of those people who finds humor in every situation, no matter how dire--and she's lived through some pretty dire ones, essentially raising four children on her own on a freelance writer's salary. In this book, she takes on midlife dating as well as sharing her history. Part memoir, part humor, part romantic advice, this book offers something for almost every middle-aged man or woman (or those who love them). For her and her husband, those 57 steps are close, but also allow the space so many of us need at this life stage. Bravo! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for a fair review. Cancer Diary: Life, Liberty, and Covid

Excerpt from the pre-publication manuscript: Chapter 13 HOW DO WE USE OUR FREEDOM? “The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear.” --Aung San Suu Kyi   ·        When the lockdowns began in March 2020 to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, “to flatten the curve,” we were shocked at this drastic measure. It underlined the seriousness and deadliness of the pandemic. We imagined the shutdown opening after a brief time. My friends and I exchanged humor and cartoons to help us cope with the shock and avoid panic. (The joking has slowed, almost to a standstill.) One cartoon was prescient of a coming attitude and agenda shift. It was a cartoon of a smiling Jim Carrey saying, “Hope they allow us off lockdown by July 4 th …so we can celebrate our freedom.” ·        His humor carries a stinging truth. Disillusionment has set in on a national scale. The lockdown was eased, but COVID-19 cases rose and States are closing down businesses and gatherings again. We are
