Excerpt from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents: Bug Off! (McKinley & Trombly)

Image
Exceptional teachers Cindy McKinley and Patti Trombly have put together a book that can help any parent through this extended period of sheltering in place during the current covid 19 pandemic. Packed with home activities for learning, readers can pick any number that appeal to them or fit their personal family circumstances. Here is one example: #203  Bug Off!  (Game for +, −, ×, ÷) Materials: a new fly swatter; flashcards, or note cards. 1. Hand your child the fly swatter and tell her she’s going to practice math. Already she’s interested and ready to enjoy this game to help improve basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. 2. Place cards with the answers to math facts she is working on in school or struggling with, face up, spreading them fairly far apart. Then, simply ask a question such as, “What is 3x4?” and have her slap the fly swatter on the index card with the correct answer. Variations: • Use another fly swatter and...

Tip #22 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley and Trombly) - Chores

Image
Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from  365 Teacher Secrets for Parents  by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly (yes, those are the two talented teachers). #22 Chores   He did each single thing as if he did nothing else. ~Charles Dickens   Studies show that having your child help with basic household chores does more than just get the house clean. By taking charge of a chore, a child learns about responsibility, consequences, planning ahead, establishing a goal, and planning how to reach it. (Not to mention the satisfaction that comes from a job well done!) Giving your child too many chores may become overwhelming, though. Experiment to find an arrangement that works well for everyone involved.   The workbook on the 365teachersecrests.com website contains a sample chore chart.          Cindy McKinley Alder                     ...

Excerpt from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents: Steal the Beat (McKinley & Trombly)

Exceptional teachers Cindy McKinley and Patti Trombly have put together a book that can help any parent through this extended period of sheltering in place. Packed with home activities for learning, readers can pick any number that appeal to them or fit their personal family circumstances. Here is one example that is bound to make the time spent in lockdown more fun: #144 Steal the Beat From a very young age, parents and teachers use song and rhyme to teach children information. From teaching the different sounds animals make in “Old McDonald” to learning the letters of the alphabet in the “Alphabet Song,” children grasp concepts and information easier when it’s presented in rhyme or song or both! Keep that in mind when you see your child struggling with a difficult task or concept. Try brainstorming with your child a rhyme that might help her spell a certain word or remember a definition.  It is usually easiest to utilize a song that everyone is familiar with. Song...

Tip #90 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKInley & Trombly) - Poetry

Image
Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from  365 Teacher Secrets for Parents  by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly. #90 The "Pros" of Poetry   Poetry is plucking at the heartstrings, and making music with them  ~Dennis Gabor   Using poetry or verse as reading material for a change can prove to be very motivational for reluctant readers and quite enjoyable for all readers. Poems are usually short, sweet, and highly entertaining. Finding poetry that fits your child's interests (such as humor, nature, realistic…) is easy to do. A librarian or bookstore employee can help you find anthologies to suite any child. If your child especially seems to enjoy reading poetry, you might try to gently suggest ways to increase academics through the use of poems. Perhaps you could:   ●       You can pause, while reading him a poem, and omit the rhyming words for him to fill in. ●    ...
