From the Blog Posts of MSI Press Authors: Arthur Yavelberg posts an interesting reflection on integrity ("Not Two")

Image
Arthur Yavelberg, author of the multi-award-winning book,  A Theology for the Rest of Us , reflects this week on the concept of integrity in a post entitled "Not Two:" " You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." (Dt. 6:5) Most people think of the term "integrity" in the moral context of "honesty," with the opposite being "dishonesty."  That is technically not the case.  "Integrity"--which has the same root as "integer" or "one"--is more about consistency between thoughts, emotions and actions.  In that case, the antonym would be "hypocrisy," which may or not involve telling the truth.  ( read more ) A Theology for the Rest of Us  has earned the following awards: Best Indie Book Award Literary Titan Silver Aware American BookFest Best Books Award finalist For more posts about Arthur and his book, click  HERE . From the Blog Posts of MSI Press Authors: Arthur Yavelberg asks "Voltaire or Shakespeare?"

Image
Today's shared blog post comes from Arthur Yavelberg, author of A Theology for the Rest of Us : " Voltaire or Shakespeare." Voltaire  was an 18th Century French playwright.  Highly influential regarding the   French Revolution ,  he was a rabid atheist and satirist. He wrote:  “One hundred years from my day, there will not be a Bible on earth except one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity-seeker.”    Ironically, it is also said that, some 50 years later, the Protestant Bible Society purchased one of the chateaus where Voltaire had his works published.  Apocryphal or not, the fact remains that far many more people today are familiar with the Bible than with Voltaire or his masterwork, “ Candide .”   I have no problem with Voltaire’s atheism.  I do have a problem with his being rabid about it.  Rationalist that he has been proclaimed to be, one would think his utter disdain for any set of beliefs would be considered far too emotional, especially on so uncer

San Juan Books Presents Its Special Authors: Meet Arthur Yavelberg

Image
San Juan Books is the hybrid division of MSI Press LLC. It allows first-time writers to become published in a traditional way through the reduction of risk by sharing publication costs. All other publishing features are traditional in nature, and most SJB authors go on to be offered traditional contracts for their subsequent books. SJB publications are available as paperback, hard cover, and e-book versions. SJB authors' books very much hold their own against their contemporaries in the traditional publishing division. Indeed, a number of them have outsold their traditional compatriots. Today, San Juan Books presents author Arthur Yavelberg. A teacher and administrator in public and private schools for close to 40 years, Arthur Yalevberg has dedicated his career to making complicated concepts and issues accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. While most of his students were middle schoolers, he has also been involved in teaching World History, American History, and Comp

Celebrating Winter Solstice with a Guest Post from MSI Press Author Arthur Yavelberg

Image
winter solstice at Old Mission San Juan Bautista Thanks to Arthur Yavelberg, author of A Theology for the Rest of Us , for this post: Religion has a bad rap these days for all kinds of reasons--many of which are more than fair. Unfortunately, what often gets lost in these issues is the basic nature of true faith and spirituality--hope.   After all, the alternative is bleak--an uncaring, arbitrary universe in which everything has arisen by accident and will eventually dissolve just as randomly.  As the Psalmist writes, our lives are as so many blades of grass and, once we are gone, our footsteps will disappear and it will be as if we never were. Compare that with the fundamental message of the spirit: there is not only design in our universe, but a divine purpose that, while perhaps mysterious, exists nevertheless.  Our lives may be limited, but we can sense the infinite--both in terms of time and the love and compassion that are the essence of what it means to be human. From this per
