A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: What Happens to Your Book When You Die?

Image
It is Tuesday. Time to tall turkey. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Today's topic addresses what happens to a book after an author dies. We have certainly had a number of authors, alas, die over the years. Each death has special circumstances, and generally each case needs a lawyer's involvement. The following examples of situations we have dealt with are simple examples of real life (and death) in action and do not set us up as having any kind of legal expertise; rather, we seek that expertise when needed. The one thing that all authors who die have in common is that copyright continues after death; it does not die with them. The question then falls to heirs and publishers as to

Daily Excerpt: It Only Hurts When I Can't Run (Parker) - Belt in the Face

Image
Exceprt from It Only Hurts When I Can't Run 23. Belt in te Face By the time I was twelve, in the seventh grade, and still under Miss Taylor’s thumb, our relationship had slowly deteriorated. It wasn’t completely my fault. It began with Miss Taylor being preoccupied with her friendship with one of her church sisters, Mrs. Manor, forcing me into give-and-take with the two Manor girls my age; fortunately, I could ignore the Manor boys.       The Manor family lived in Sebring’s country outskirts. Miss Taylor would take me, Jon, and any other kids in her temporary care to the country. The county scents that changed from sweet to foul, depending on where you stood in the yard, surprised and invigorated me. Dodging snorting pigs and running after chickens (or from them, in my case, because I thought they were crazed beasts) put a lot of glee into the day. Playing in a smelly trailer hidden in the woods made it seem like we had our own personal house. Eating fried sweet potatoes, rather

Cancer Diary: Contributing in Death

Image
Last Tuesday marked one year since Carl Leaver, co-founder of MSI Press LLC, passed from cancer. On that day, while we did a number of things to commemorate the significance of his life and the year since he left us, of some import, as I mentioned that days, was receiving a note from Science Care that they had planted another tree, a year later, in his honor in a national forest. That act brings to mind the ways that one's contributions do not end with death. They continue. Not only in the relatives and family traditions one leaves behind but in many other ways as well. Science Care, which accepts whole body donations, facilitates contribution in the areas of research and medical student training. Similarly, those who donate organs, improve the ongoing lives of people who might otherwise have died or lived impaired lives. So many financial donations are given in the names of those who pass on as a form of memorial. Those donations to very worthwhile endeavors likely would not o
