Book Jewel of the Month: Road to Damascus (E. Imady) - great cross-cultural memoir

Image
What is a book jewel? A sometimes-overlooked book with remarkable insight and potential significance. Each month, we share near-daily, or as often as possible, reviews of the monthly book jewel - short, succinct reviews that can be read in 1-2 minutes with links to the reviewer by reviewers whose words are worthy of being heard and whose opinions are worthy of being considered. Sometimes a couple of minutes contains more impressive thought than ten times that many. We will let you decide that. This month's book jewel is  Road to Damascus  by Elaine Imady. Description: Recommended by US Review of Books and First Runner-Up in the Eric Hoffer Awards legacy competition, Road to Damascus describes the Middle Eastern journey of an American who meets and falls in love with a Syrian when they are both attending school in New York. Giving up her country and her religion to follow her husband back to Syria, Elaine Imady has made a life that has successfully bridged two cultures and two con

Daily Excerpt: A Believer-in-Waiting's First Encounters with God (Elizabeth Mahlou) - To the Reader

Image
Excerpt from  A Believer-in-Waiting  by Elizabeth Mahlou.  To the Reader My first intent was to call this book Hierophany and Contemplation because that is how my life with God has unfolded. However, the more time I have spent writing this book, the clearer it has become that a simpler title would serve better. That is when I remembered the appellation given to me by friends in Jordan a few years ago: believer in waiting. They refused to accept my professions of atheism and chose instead to view me as a lost lamb whom God would scoop up sooner or later, which, indeed, God did. Along with scooping me up, God gave me the task of writing. Although I did not gunderstand what that task was to encompass, I did know that this writing was not to be more of the professional books I publish but rather writing for the glory of God and especially for those who might also be lost lambs, believers in waiting, souls chased by the Hound of Heaven, or whatever other label one might use. It is a

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Passive Income from Book Sales

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's post addresses an issue that is a pet peeve: financial advice columns and articles that advise on side hustles to develop passive income, with the case in point being "publishing" books through Amazon. Now, you do want your book on Amazon. We want our books on Amazon. Amazon is a strong source of sales for us. However, this is not really a passive sources of income, one that you sent up once and then sit back and rake in money. The following realities need to be considered to avoid major disappointment. Amazon will fulfill orders, but Amazon will not sell your book for you. You need to do your own marketing. Marketing is

A Book for Earth Day

Image
Recommending an excellent affiliated book for Earth Day: Walks Far Man: In Step with History on the Pacific Crest Trail  by Jim Ostdick. Jim Ostdick is a retired Earth Science teacher and independent author who lives on the ancestral lands of the Amah Mutsun Ohlone near the central California coast. In  Walks Far Man: In Step with History on the Pacific Crest Trail , Ostdick recounts his Pacific Crest Trail hiking experiences in the context of a larger, more vibrant story, thousands of years in the making. The Pacific Crest Trail in its current state is less than a century old. The land that the trail crosses was once home to bands of strong, inventive humans whose norms and values were strikingly dissimilar to the settlers and armies who vanquished them. With that in mind, Ostdick’s intentions are threefold: 1) to identify and honor the indigenous tribes who occupied and traveled the lands traversed by today’s Pacific Crest Trail, 2) to draw appreciation and respect for the cultural
