Lamentations of the Heart, Mingled with Peace and Joy, is aptly named and provides an enormous fount of solace and inspiration from cover to cover. Ms. Wells-Smith writes a faith-driven, emotionally and intellectually intelligent book of poetry and prose, each piece interwoven with a scriptural citation, that delves into her own experience with becoming a member of a club none of us would ever want to apply for, those of us who have lost a beloved child and are left with putting our lives back together as best we can, one foot after another, as well as prose about events and people that have led her to the place in life that she can find peace and joy. It is deeply personal and because of that spoke to my own heart in ways that are hard to describe. I will return to this book at times because it has given me much to think about, which is the best kind of literature.

Like most of us, I’ve experienced the sting of death in my personal life but more so in my 45-year career as a Registered Nurse and Case Manager. This is one book that I’d definitely recommend to family members who are enduring bereavement!
Ms. Wells-Smith describes how she sadly and suddenly lost her only son in his 20th decade of life. In the midst of her anguish however, she’s been given signs of reassurance that could have only come from her Higher Power.
Ms. Wells-Smith poignantly conveys how and why her faith has unshackled her from the grips of incapacitating grief. She cites examples and bears witness to the fact that by claiming the promises given to each of us, we can endure that which might seem impossible to endure.

I am thoroughly pleased with Marti Well-Smith's book, "Lamentations of the Heart."
She lost her only child in 2019 just as I did.
The poems and insights touched my soul.
She being a Christian mother inserted pertinent Biblical scriptures after many beautiful poems.
The author also told us of the uplifting wondrous signs she received in the story of her son, Grant.
Her words affected me deeply.
Although her book may be painful at times, her faith uplifts us to go on with God's help.

I highly recommend this book for those who are seeking solice.

I was called to this book having lost a spouse and a child. My heart aches for the bereaved and my soul longs to learn about the journey that comes after such an incredible loss.

This book is a wonderful tribute to her son and represents how only the Lord can see you through some of the most horrific moments of life.
