Beyond the Text of Good Blood (Schaffer) - Aunt Elli

Image
Over the past week, Irit Schaffer, author of Good Blood, Second Edition , has been sharing family photos to help readers get a feel for the people in the memoir. Here she shares a photograph of her Aunt Elli, who is featured in the book, writing -  " Here is a photo of my Great Aunt Elli and myself in Kosice. She is 88 years old in the photo. Ice cream was a rare delicacy for her. She was the one who shared with me that the greatest gift of life is the gift of love. She shared how the Nazis knew nothing about love and what is important in life, and it was why she was able to forgive the Nazis. She was the closest person to an angel that I knew. She was filled with so much light and love. " Book description: When she was a child, her father said he had "good blood" and that is why he and his wife survived and healed from the Holocaust. The author searched for the meaning and significance of her father's words over two continents and through four generations. He

The Story behind the Book: Practices That Work: Bringing Learners to Professional Proficiency in World Languages (Garza)

Image
This week's blog post is the next in the series of book back stories and is the story behind  Practices That Work , edited by Dr. Thomas  Jesús  Garza. From the publisher -  This is one story whose back story I know very well. I created it!  For years, a What Works in developing high levels of foreign language proficiency was wildly popular, especially at government language institutes where outcomes are intently monitored. It was a simple book with a powerful message, a small book with a big impact, short recipes by famous "language chefs" who had, as a team, led the now-closed Coalition of Distinguished Language Centers. It was known by many as  " the little yellow book." Over time, it became dated. Over time the publishing rights migrated to MSI Press LLC (long story for another time). Over time, the original authors ("language chefs") retired (and, in some cases, alas, died).  What to do with the book rights became a question, especially with the

Publisher's Pride: Books on Bestseller Lists - Good Blood (Schaffer)

Image
Today's Publisher's Pride is  Good Blood, Second Edition  by Irit Schaffer, which reached #337 in theater biographies -- an accomplishment for two reasons: (1) it is a large, competitive category, and (2) Amazon had a glitch that took over a month and multiple requests to fix, resulting in the book being available but unavailable at the same time! All straight now, and congrats to the author! Book description: When she was a child, her father said he had "good blood" and that is why he and his wife survived and healed from the Holocaust. The author searched for the meaning and significance of her father's words over two continents and through four generations. Her journey uncovered a unique voice of wisdom revealing mysteries of the healing powers within us and the existence of light in every situation that helps us overcome and transcend any obstacle. This book is a quest into the depth of the human spirit. It is a rich family memoir, being deeply personal, sha

Caturday: Why do cats paw at water?

Image
Our cat, Bear, is both big and a big drinker. He wants his "trough" full -- and he does paw at it sometimes. Testing the depths? Why do cats...?  Cats do the darndest things, but often there is an explanation. This Caturday the question is why do cats paw at water? Here are some thoughts about that:  Why Do Cats Paw Around Their Water Bowl?  See more  Caturday  posts. Read more  posts about cats .
