Friday Precerpt: Raising Happy Cat Families - Gaining a Cat's Confidence - final note (Norwood)

 Question: What is a precerpt?

Answer: A precerpt is a brief excerpt or preview of a book (or other text), used to give readers a taste of the content before they read the full piece. It's like a sneak peek that hooks the reader's interest (or at least, we hope it will hook yours).

This Friday's precerpt is from Raising Happy Cat Families by Luna Norwood --

GAINING A CAT'S CONFIDENCE
(part 3/final note)

Bobolink was an FIV cat. In time, he developed two fatal diseases: autoimmune hemolytic anemia and amyloidosis, for which he had to take medicines. By the time he became very sick, he was devoted to me and trusted me. He spent a large portion of every day sitting in a chair with me while I worked, absorbing my body heat into his anemic body and licking my hands and face in gratitude. When it came to his medicines, he was compliant, no matter how they tasted or how I had to give them to him. Sadly, his blood count dropped wildly as a result of the autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and during a trip to the emergency room for a blood transfusion, he had a heart attack while being prepped. Although the vet was able to re-start his heart, he did not know how long it would last and predicted the possibility of a painful death on the way home. I made the incredibly painful decision to help my dear Bobolink pass peacefully over the Rainbow Bridge that had been awaiting him for some time.

While waiting for the vet, who gave us nearly an hour together, Bobolink quietly, weakly, nestled into my arms, looking up at me for the last time, then put his head under my arm and stopped moving. I did not know if he was resting or dying; he was very peaceful and relaxed, and I held him that way for a long time until the vet came in with the anesthesia. Bobolink died peacefully in my arms, either before the euthanasia or from it. In my arms is where he felt most comfortable. I had long ago gained his confidence. (And he mine.)

I went home with an empty carrier and cried for days. I still miss him.
