Today's tip for parents (from two talented teachers) comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly (yes, those are the two talented teachers).

The
Message Center
Failure
to prepare is preparing to fail.

Creating a Message Center
is an easy way for the entire family to get organized and stay on track. It
needs to be in a central location that all family members see frequently
throughout the day, such as the kitchen. Every family has different needs, so
every message center will not look the same. Here are some great ideas to get
you started:
● Display
a monthly calendar where everyone writes important events for all to see.
● Offer
a weekly calendar so that everyone, at a glance, can know what is going on each
day. (The wipe-off kind work great because they’re reusable, have plenty of
room, and are easy to update. Try a different color for each family member!)
● Have
a specific and convenient place for communications (e.g., letters to and from
school, notices, lunch money) to be dropped off or picked up. This could be a
magnetic bin on the side of the fridge, a tray on the desk, or something
similar.)
You could try displaying:
● Descriptions
of important homework assignments or projects so the whole family is aware of
them and may be more apt to help with them.
● Spelling
lists. Again, the whole family can be involved in helping your child practice
them.
● A
word of the day or week. This could be a spelling word, a reading word (for
younger children), or even a challenge word (older kids can learn its
definition and try using it!)
● Great
accomplishments. (Drawings, good spelling tests, a finished report, poetry…)
