Internet Safety

Internet safety begins at home.

~ Mike Fitzpatrick

As your child progresses through elementary school, he will have many opportunities to use the Internet for school-related work. Students often use it for research when writing a report, playing educational games, or checking the classroom website that many teachers now have. It’s important to talk about safe use of the Internet. It’s not hard to imagine how a student researching Abraham Lincoln can suddenly be on a completely different website because he clicked an advertisement for a movie clip or a YouTube video, which may lead to inappropriate content. Help your child learn to use the Internet responsibly and safely by helping your kids understand they should:

      Never share their names, schools, ages, phone numbers, or addresses;

      Never send pictures to strangers;

      Keep passwords private (except to parents);

      Never open email from strangers; it may contain viruses that can harm a computer;

      Immediately tell an adult if something uncomfortable or mean happens;

      Only go on appropriate sites, and if they are not sure, ask;

Make sure your computer is set up in a public place in the house. Walk by often to check on your child’s progress and to make sure he stays on task. Or better yet, show interest in what he’s learning and looking at online. Visit the sites that are interesting to him and play some of the games he plays. You can also learn how to check the history of sites your child has visited. Your computer probably lets you set up limits on the websites your child is allowed to open which can stop a lot of problems before they come up. If you teach your child how to use technology responsibly now, your job will be easier when he starts to use the Internet more independently when he’s older.
