Tip #74 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKInley & Trombly) - Presidents' Day

Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

Presidents Day

Here is a great opportunity to visit the library with your child
to search for some age-appropriate books about these very famous presidents.

Presidents Day is usually celebrated in February. However, no matter what time of year it is, it’s always a good time to learn more about our past presidents. In honor of our past leaders, why not have some fun while reading about them? Try to find a book either at your child's reading level for him to read on his own or any interesting book to read to your child during shared reading time about any president they find interesting. You might even make a KWL chart of things that you've learned (Idea #94).

Once you've learned about them, challenge your child to make a birthday card for one of the former presidents. What kind of a personalized message or picture will he put on it especially for him, based on the information he has learned? Have him pretend to send it. Could you write back to him as the president himself and reply to his thoughtful message? Fun activities like this make reading all the more meaningful and fun.
