Winning Books
some are born
great, some achieve greatness,
and some have
greatness thrust upon them.
If you are not familiar
with the great array of children’s books available and don’t know where to
begin looking for quality, appropriate books, here’s a suggestion: every year
there are two major awards given to quality children’s literature as determined
by Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American
Library Association. The first is the Caldecott Medal, dedicated to Randolph
Caldecott. The Caldecott is awarded annually to the artist who created the most
distinguished illustrations in a children's book. Some of the most recent
Caldecott Medal winning books are:
*
A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka
*
A Sick Day for Amos McGee, illustrated by Erin E. Stead, written by Philip
C. Stead
*
The Lion & the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney
The second award is the
Newbery Medal, dedicated to John Newbery. The Newbery Medal honors the year’s
most distinguished contribution to American literature for children written by
an American. Some of the most recent books to receive the Newbery Medal are:
*
Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos
*
Moon over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool
*
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
On your next visit to the library, you might try checking out some of the award winners from recent times or from years gone by. Compare them to other books you enjoy. Do you agree with the award? Why do you think the book was chosen to win the award? Can you find other books published the same year? Do you think they would have been worthy of the reward, instead? Why?
