SQ3R: Review
A book must be the ax for the frozen sea within us. ~ Franz Kafka, 1904
REVIEW, the last of the 3 Rs in SQ3R, is a longer process. While reciting happens directly after reading, reviewing happens later, to prepare for an evaluation like a test or quiz.
A few days before the test, your child should begin to study. Here are some things he can try:
● Reread the notes he took during and after reading and look over the text itself if he annotated right on it.
● Ask someone to help him study. You are a good choice; you can create questions for the important points he has highlighted, underlined, or noted. Write the most difficult questions on note cards (with answers on the back) so he can even study alone later. Handing over the text and asking someone else to quiz him is a much better study method than doing so alone. If your child looks things over on his own, he may have the tendency to say “Yep, I know that” when really he is not recalling the information but simply recognizing it. If someone else quizzes him, he will not have the option of simply recognizing a fact; he will have to recall it.
● Each day, he should take some time to do this reviewing. Studies show that smaller amounts of study time spread out over a few days is better than cramming the night before.
By now you have read about all the steps of SQ3R. They may seem awkward at first or time-consuming. When your child goes through them for the first time, though, see if he does better on the assignment or test. If so, point out that doing all the steps helped him get ready to read, read more purposefully and with more comprehension, and review more efficiently. Again, he may not use every single step the same way every time. Trying the steps out now, though, in elementary school, starts a pattern that will likely help him out with every reading assignment in his future—and there will be many!
