What's in There?
There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island.
~ Walt Disney
In Idea #95, you read about SQ3R. The first step is to have your child Survey the text he is about to read. Not every reading assignment will have all of the following parts, but if and when they do, they could be important to helping your child better comprehend. The next time your child brings home his textbook or an informational text of any kind, browse it together. We often assume our kids know what all the different parts are, but many have never actually been shown. Here are some things to seek out and discuss their purpose:
Title: Is it a creative title only, or can we predict what the text will be about from it?
Headings and Subheadings (usually in bold): They usually do tell exactly what that section is about.
Table of Contents: Shows all the major sections in the book. Show your child how to look through this, for instance, when choosing books for reports. Will this book be full of the information he really wants?
Captions: Many kids want to skip over pictures and graphs because they feel this is “extra stuff,” and they don’t want more to do! However, these visual aids are often included to show in a quick, easy-to-understand way something discussed at length in words. Talk about and interpret graphs together. Let your child make up questions to “quiz” you. Show him that looking at these can often help him understand more quickly and better than the reading alone.
Bold Words: Words that the author knows may be new or difficult for children are often bolded. It’s usually a good idea to pay extra attention to them.
Glossary: A quick reference place to look up vocabulary words from this book. It is much quicker to use this than a dictionary.
Index: A detailed list of words and concepts in the book and the location of the information can be found in the Index. It is helpful to show your child how this can be used to help him answer tough-to-find questions.
