Books as Gifts

Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside them,
and it’s much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world.

~Neil Gaiman

How many times has your child been invited to a birthday party and can’t think of anything to buy his friend? When it is time for your child’s birthday, is he stumped for ideas? The next time you are stuck trying to figure out what to buy as a gift for a child, think about a book!

Informational books about a specific interest a child has can be a great idea for a gift. Ask your child what his friends’ interests are, and see if the two of you can find a book for a present. For your own child, do the same; think of some of his hobbies or things he is interested in right now. You might also ask a bookseller what is popular. If you would like your child to get more into reading informational books, you could request that his guests bring a book instead of a card that can sometimes cost just as much but will just be thrown away. You could do this as well when giving a gift; use a book instead of a card. Put a nice personalized message inside that the recipient will have for years.

Need more convincing? Here are several reasons why books are a great gift.

They encourage connection—when you share a book with a child, you are creating a connection - especially if you share a book that was one of your favorites growing up.

They are non-electronic—what better way to encourage your child to unplug than to offer a much-loved book.

They are good for you—they help create a strong foundation for learning and reinforce that reading is important for their growth.

It’s like giving a vacation - reading a great book can take children places they’ve never been. It’s a great and inexpensive way to escape and learn something new. You could give a book on a place he has already visited (perhaps a previous family vacation?) so he can revisit and remember a place where he’s been before, or you can give a book to a place he would love to go so he can learn about it more before he may someday go there.

They are inexpensive - Compared to the technology that so many children ask for and the price of expensive toys, book are quite a deal. They can hold the attention of the reader much longer than the newest fad toy or game.

They are easy to give - Books can be purchase online and sent to children, or at big box stores, toy stores, gift shops, and even grocery stores!

They have a wide appeal - Books appeal to everyone. Even children who believe they don’t like reading can be excited about a book that appeals to their interest like a comic book or a book that is included with building a model plane.

Did you know February 14 is International Book Giving Day? What a great way to show your love for someone special!
