Tip #117 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley, Trombly) - Organizing

Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

                                                                #117

3-2-1 Strategy

Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.
~
A. A. Milne

The 3-2-1 strategy is another great way to help your child create the habit of thinking about what she is learning as she reads. Before your child reads an informational text, tell her when she’s done she should be able to tell you three things she learned, two things she found interesting and one question she may have. You should consider modeling this first for her so she has a better understanding of what you want. You may find it helpful to set up a 3-2-1 sheet where she can write down her answers when she’s done. Simply take a sheet of paper and draw two lines from the top of the paper to the bottom so you have three equal columns. In the first column, have her write the heading “3-What I Learned.” In the middle column, she can write “2- What I Found Interesting.” The third column could read “1-Question.” When she’s done reading, have her fill in the columns.

You should read the question she wrote in the “Question” column and encourage her to look for the answer to her question as she continues to read. If she doesn’t find the answer in her continued reading, you can use this opportunity to research together, maybe on the Internet or at the library. It’s a great way to encourage her curiosity and reinforce the importance of asking questions while reading.

This sheet may become very useful when it is time to study for a test. She will have many facts she needs to know right at her fingertips. She will spend less time looking back through the text and will be less frustrated.
