Practice
doesn't make perfect.
Practice
reduces the imperfection.

As
with many of the ideas in this book, most of the ideas in this chapter will
require your help. Whether your child is a new reader or a fluent reader, many
of these strategies and ideas will be new to him. Perhaps he will recognize
some from school. Perhaps not. Regardless, many will require some preparatory
work from you and, especially at first, some guidance from you as well.
In
the classroom, teachers recognize the need for different types of teaching
strategies at different times. Often, when a subject is new, a teacher will
share a lesson or explain a new skill to the whole class. The next step is not
to send all of the kids back to their seats to work on more problems just like
it completely on their own. They know that students will need a little “guided
practice” where their presence—and help—is required. They walk around and see
how kids are doing and offer help as soon as it’s needed. Eventually, though,
students have had enough practice with that skill and they can work on it more
independently; this is called “independent practice.”
At
home, you are the teacher, and many of these activities will require a bit
guided practice before your child can work on it alone. You will need to sit
with your child and show him how a strategy works. He will need you close by at
first, reminding him how it is done, modeling, checking all along the way to be
sure he is doing things correctly. The goal, however, is to have your child
working independently soon. Only you will know when he is ready for that step. Showing
them a strategy once is all some kids need. For others (or for tougher
strategies), they may need much more guidance. Just keep in mind that during elementary
school you will start out helping a lot and end up not helping much at all. How
much time in between is up to you and your child!
