SQ3R:
A
Reading Comprehension Technique
There
are many little ways to enlarge your child's world.
Love of books is the best of all.
~
Jacqueline Kennedy
If your child has ever
read something and afterward can’t answer many questions about it, you know her
comprehension was insufficient. It is possible for a child to be able to read
out loud fluently, even expressively, and yet not remember much (or anything)
of what they read. It is important to keep in mind the true definition of
reading which involves not just saying
the words but also understanding the
words and constructing meaning from those words. If your child is not doing
that, is she really reading?
Since informational text
can be more difficult to understand and, therefore, to read, it is important to
offer children strategies to better comprehend early on. One very effective
method for understanding informational text is called SQ3R. The letters in SQ3R
stand for these stages of reading:
S= Survey
Q= Question
R= Read
R= Recite
R= Review
At
first, doing these five steps may seem tedious to her. In general, children
just want to start reading informational text so they can be done. You can help
change the way she thinks. Help her realize the goal of reading is to
understand what she has read, not just to get it done. Once she uses this
method a few times, she will realize she can finish her assignments more
quickly without looking back through the text again and again. Once she
realizes she’s working smarter, not harder, she will embrace this strategy and
use it frequently.
Still,
not every single step of SQ3R needs to be done for every single thing she will
ever read. However, practicing the steps now will help her build good habits
that will last a lifetime. She will learn to use whichever steps are most
helpful to her, modify her approach for each different texts, and become a
better reader.
The
next five activities will explain in more detail each part of the comprehension
technique, SQ3R.
