SQ3R: Survey

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
 ~Confucius

Imagine walking into a crowded room at a party. When you walk in, you may stop and take a look around the room and gather information about what and who you see. You might see some friends, a table with food, an empty chair, etc. You use that information to make a decision on what to do next. You are surveying the room. Surveying a book works in a similar way. SURVEY, the first part of SQ3R, means to have your child give a quick look through what he is about to read and gather information.

Imagine he has a chapter to read in Social Studies about the Declaration of Independence. Here are some things to Survey:

Have him read the title and guess what it’s about.

Look through the section for pictures and read the captions underneath.

Pay attention to bold words; they are bold for a reason; he may need to know their definitions.

Use the bold headings to predict what he will be reading about.

These all set the stage for good comprehension because he is already thinking about what he’ll read before he reads. While he reads, he will be looking to see if his predictions were right. Whether he notices that he is right or wrong, IF he notices, he will know he is comprehending!

Depending on the length of what he has to read, this step can take as little as a minute, but it is worth so much because it may be the difference in comprehending what he reads... or not!
