Fun in the Funnies

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.
~E. E. Cummings

Families who laugh together can also learn together at the same time! It’s always more fun to learn (or practice) in fun and motivational ways. Here’s an idea that will be fun for the whole family and will also help your child with his writing skills.

Start by cutting out a comic strip from a newspaper or magazine. Choose one that your child enjoys but hasn’t seen yet so he won’t know what the characters are saying.

Cut out the bubbles in which the characters’ words are written.

Tape or glue the cartoon strip with missing bubbles onto a clean sheet of paper.

Have your child use the pictures to guess what could be happening in the strip.

Once he has an idea what the cartoon may be about, he can fill in the bubbles using his own words and ideas to create a new, and perhaps even funnier, comic than the original!

The whole family may enjoy cutting out different cartoons strips and filling in the bubbles with humorous dialogue. It may also be interesting to show the whole family the same cartoon strip and have everyone fill in the dialogue separately. Then, you can all compare to see how differently everyone views the same pictures.
