Tip #133 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley, Trombly) - Fun with Words

Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

Fun with Words

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.

~Dr. Seuss

Poetry is playing around with words in unique and wonderful ways. You can also do the same without creating a poem. Just make up some silly stuff! Try these:

Alliterations (sentences in which most of the words begin with the same sound):

Have your child choose a beginning letter or sound. Let’s use “m” as an example.

Now have him brainstorm a wide variety of words that begin with that letter.

He can now experiment with creating a sentence again, in which every word begins with the same letter: Mary made many marvelous muffins.

Tongue Twisters (alliteration used to create tricky-to-say sentences):

Have your child choose a sound to start (such as “s”, “ch”, “dr”).

Then, have him make a list of all of the words that begin with that sound, have it in the middle, or have it near the end. He’ll want to include various parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, if possible. (For instance, if he picks the “k” sound he might make a list such as: “Jack, lake, lucky, like, rake, snakes, take, skate, Jake, back, quickly, black.”)

Now, have him experiment with putting the words together to form some kind of a silly sentence. He should try to use as many of the words as possible and as few of any other words that do not follow the pattern as possible. Ideally, it should be a tad tricky to say as well. He might end up with a sentence such as: Lucky Jake rakes black snakes quickly, and Jack takes snakes back to the lake.

Acrostic Poems:

Have your child write the letters in his name going down on a piece of paper.

For each letter, your child should think of a word that describes him beginning with that letter. Older children could be challenged to think of a tongue twister or alliteration for each! It might look like this:

Jelly

Octopus

Running

Drums

Ants

Neptune

Variations:

He could rewrite his name poem neatly (or type it) and mount it on construction paper. Then, he could illustrate it with drawings of the things he wrote in his poem.

He could surprise someone with one (the person’s name) as a personal and touching gift.

Could he make one for everyone in the house by interviewing each person quickly to find out what everyone likes? Hang them on each person’s bedroom door!

Try this with a word other than his name.
