Our
greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising up every time we fail.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Here is an activity that
is fun, easy, inexpensive, motivational, and rewarding for years to come. (It
will help increase your child’s love of writing and writing skills as well!)
Become a collector of
postcards everywhere you go. Vacation spots are an obvious place to find them,
but they can often be found in museums, shops (even rest stops!), and other
places that people visit often.
Encourage your child to
write briefly about his experiences and feelings while at the place depicted on
the postcard. He may also want to include notes about things to bring or do the
next time he visits. He might write about the best parts of the visit or a
funny thing that happened while there. You may want to pick up a few postcards
in certain very-fun places that you anticipate might warrant a lot of writing.
It may help your child to discuss the trip with you and the family before he
writes. Not only will it help him focus, but it will also teach him a little
about summarizing!
If your child is young,
take dictation and write on the postcard for him. If he is older, he can write
it himself. You could save them and add them to a binder for safe keeping. A
great collection can be made after a few years, and what a treasure to take
with him and add to later when he begins traveling on his own. If he does all
the writing each time, your child will be able to look back and see his growth
throughout the years as his skills increase with each new card.
