Roll of the Dice

Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.

~Michael Jordan

Materials: two dice, paper, pencil, calculator (for younger children)

Objective: to be the first to reach 100 points (or other agreed upon number) by rolling the dice.

Sometimes the best part of playing a game, for children, is rolling the dice or spinning the spinner. Use your child's love of dice to play this game that helps practice addition and subtraction. Here's how to play:

1.     Everyone playing picks a number from 1 to 6. That number will be his or her unlucky number.

2.     The first person rolls the dice. If her unlucky number does not show up, she adds the dice together and writes the sum down on paper.

3.     Now, she has a decision to make: keep rolling or pass the dice to the next person. If she keeps rolling, she adds the amount on the dice to the original amount on the paper. She can continue to roll the dice and add the amount to her total, or she can be safe and pass the dice to the next person and protect the points she has accumulated. (Perhaps draw a line to show where one turn stopped and another began.) However, if she rolls her unlucky number on one of the dice, she loses all points accumulated during that roll. If she rolls the dice and her unlucky number is on both dice, she loses all points and has to start again at zero. The first person to reach 100 points wins.

Example: Susan’s unlucky number is 2. On her first roll she has a 1 and 5. She writes 6 on her paper. She decides to roll again. She rolls a 3 and 6. She adds 9+6 and writes 15 on her paper. She decides to pass the dice and not be too greedy. (She may want to draw a line to designate where she stopped.) The next time it’s Susan’s turn, she rolls a 4 and 5. She adds 15+9 and writes 24 on her paper. She rolls again and gets a 2 and 3. Since 2 is her unlucky number, she loses all the points she’s accumulated on that turn (up to that line she drew). So she loses the 9 points and goes back to 15 points. If she would have rolled double 2s, she would have lost all points and had to start again at zero!

Variations:

Allow younger children to add the dice together for each roll, but use the calculator to add it to their total.

Need subtraction practice? Start at 100 and subtract down to zero. (The first person to reach zero wins.) If you roll doubles of your unlucky number, this way you would go up to 100 again.
