Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

The
More Things Change...(“New Math”)
With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.
Today, many elementary
schools are teaching adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing differently
than how many parents learned it themselves. They are teaching it, sometimes,
in several different ways to try to reach all learners and to get kids ready
little by little. It can be frustrating when you child comes home with adding
homework and you try to help by saying “Carry the one” and they look at you
like you just spoke another language. They’ve never heard of “carrying.” Your way
may now be considered the “traditional way” of teaching.
For adding, a popular new
method is “Partial Sums.”
For subtracting, a
popular new method is “Partial Differences.”
For multiplying, some
popular new methods are “Partial Products” and “Lattice.”
For dividing, a popular
new method is “Partial Quotients” or “Ladder Division.”
Of course, it is extremely difficult to help your child if the way the teacher teaches it is different from how you would. It is also confusing and frustrating to teach your child the “traditional” way, only to have them go to school and see it done differently. So, to help you out, we’ve included step-by-step instructions in the Appendix for how to teach each of these methods. The field of education is always changing, and new methods are always being sought and very well may find their way into your child’s homework. If so, don’t fret. Try Googling the concept, or even ask his teacher for instructions. Remember, teachers want concepts to be reinforced at home so they will be happy to send you info!
