Caturday - Sula's grave

Image
I doubt that much more needs to be said. We (the community of Old Mission San Juan Bautista) placed the headstone on the grave of Sula, known here as an MSI Press author, this past week. May she rest in place, having served her community well for 17 years. See Sula's Face Book page . See more posts about Sula . See more Caturday posts. Anticipating Sula's Memorial: A Special Day for a Special Cat

Image
Tomorrow at least 70 community members -- may be a lot more since these are the only ones who voluntarily sent an RSVP. Television coverage is expected, and the service will be videotaped. With any luck, we will have it available for the next Caturday. It will als o be available on Sula's Face Book page . The Memorial Service includes all the usual components: prayer, song, and eulogies. In addition, a gratitude basket is being given to the Animal Cancer Center in Monterey, where the staff prolonged Sula's life by two years, and, this being close to Francistide , Br. James from the St. Francis Retreat Center will be be blessing the animals.  Sula's prayer card, which will be distributed at the memorial service, can be ordered through the MSI Press webstore , essentially at cost, by anyone anywhere who would find the card comforting.  For more posts about Sula, click HERE . Daily Excerpt: Easter at the Mission (Sula): Memorial to Evgeny Yanovich

Image
Excerpt from Easter at the Mission Zhenya with his daughter, Julie Photograph by his wife, Alla Yanovich MEMORIAL TO EVGENIY YANOVICH I want to dedicate this book to Evgeniy (Zhenya) Yanovich, the illustrator of my Christmas book. Even more, I want to share his exceptional story. Zhenya was born in Akademgorodok, a tiny town like San Juan Bautista, outside the large city of Novosibirsk in Siberia. Akademgorodok, situated on the Ob River, is home to the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is about all that is there, but that is enough. The Academy of Sciences is a special institute of some of the most talented scientists and researchers in Russia. Zhenya was born with spina bifida. In 1979, Siberia had no access to antibiotics or the special treatments available to spina bifida children in some other parts of the world. Doctors held out no hope for Zhenya’s survival, but he lived. As he grew up, everyone in his town noticed his artwork and the immense talent it

A Book for the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist

Image
Today is the feast day of St. John the Baptist, and Sula, Parish Cat at Old Mission, has a book that is perfect for the day. The cover of Sains I Know shows the statue of St. John the Baptist in Sula's hometown of San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist). Here is Sula's description of SJB. St. John the Baptist Early first Century A.D. The town of San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist), where our Mission is located, was founded on the feast day of St. John the Baptist, June 24 (the reason that most of my books have been released on June 24), and named after him. Our Mission was founded on that day, too. In the beginning, the two were very connected. St. John the Baptist is one of the best-known saints, even to non-Catholics. Even so, his exact birth dates are not known. He was born six months before Jesus, whose coming he foreshadowed, and was murdered in the last year of Jesus’s ministry, so we do know the approximate dates—the first 30 or so years of the first century. He

Daily Excerpt: Christmas at the Mission (Sula): Angels

Image
Excerpt from Christmas at the Mission  Angels In the  Bible, Luke tells us about the important role that the angels played in the birth of Jesus. They were the voices and choir letting the shepherds know the good news. Angels are messengers from God. In fact, that is what the word, angel , means [B2]   : messenger . [VW3]   Jesus’s birth is not the only time that the angels been involved in the affairs of people. Think about some other times: ·        Three angels appeared to Abraham; he gave them food and rest, and they told him that his wife Sarah, who was very, very old, would have a child—and she did: Isaac. ·        Jacob wrestled with an angel. ·        It was two angels who saved Lott [VW4]   [B5]   from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. ·        An angel appeared to Joshua before the fight for Jericho—and we know that Joshua and his people won, with the help of God. ·        An angel rescued Daniel from the lion’s den. ·        An angel announced to Zachar
