A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: The Odd Effect of Subsequent Publications

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  First book starts to sell again -- and outsells the second and third books (Rose and Sword  - no competitions or awards; How to Live from the Heart; not always the off effect - some second and third books have outsold earlier ones Earlier posts become more popular than current ones. (Greenebaum's older post same day as new post posted) Today's post addresses an interesting phenomenon in which subsequent publications improve the sales of previous publications, sometimes with previous publications outselling the new books. Books in Series It stands to reason that subsequent publications will bring in better sales for all books in a ser

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Do Not Overlook the Power of Small

It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's topic suggests not underestimating the power of small. As in your book niche; as in your publisher. Take a look at it: Being in a small niche is not a bad thing.  While there may be fewer overall members of your target audience, you are not going to sell to every member of your target audience, anyway. For example, if your niche is parenting, yes, you have a lot of possible buyers BUT you have a proportionately greater number of competitors; unless you have a recognizable name, you may not be able to get your book "seen."      Some niches are easier to dominate than others. So, for example, the parenting category, into wh

Book Jewel of the Month: From Deep Within (Susan Lewis) - Reviewed by Viga Boland

What is a book jewel? A sometimes-overlooked book with remarkable insight and potential significance. Starting in August, we will share near-daily, as possible, reviews of the monthly book jewel - short, succinct reviews that can be read in 1-2 minutes with links to the reviewer by reviewers whose words are worthy of being heard and whose opinions are worthy of being considered. Sometimes a couple of minutes contains more impressive thought than ten times that many. We will let you decide that. This month's book jewel is  From Deep Within  by  Susan Lewis, Ph.D., J.D.  From Viga Boland for Readers' Favorite: More than likely, you’ve most often seen the people that Susan J. Lewis writes about in her book, From Deep Within, in TV crime shows. Now and then, you might even have come across some of them wandering around your neighborhood. Odds are, of course, that these people are the ones you’d avoid: smelly derelicts, foul-mouthed hookers, tattooed drug users, pedophiles and tho

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Two Avenues to Successful Book Sales

It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's topic addresses two distinct and different paths to decent book sales. One is via author's reputation and the other through direct promotion and marketing efforts. The former has a choice of using the latter approach as well, but that does not work in reverse. Authors with well-rcognized names definitely have a leg up in the book sales department for a number of reasons: Readers are pulled to read books by famous people; fame often comes from position in life (social class) or political power -- something about the lives and thoughts of successful people are attractive (well, I think we all know why). Writers who have achieve

excerpt from Harnessing the Power of Grief (Potter) Introduction Grief, the process by which we adjust to the losses in our lives, is often one of the most devastating and life-changing experiences in a human being’s life. Like all who have come before us, each of us will suffer important losses and will experience grief. A fraction of us will experience complicated grief and will benefit from professional help. Treatment of complicated grief is beyond the scope of this book, as discussed below. Most of us will experience normal grief, still very difficult, but manageable without professional help. In time, with our inner and outer resources, we will make a satisfactory adjustment to our loss. How do we do this? We harness the power of grief, and that is the subject of this book. In my career, I coordinated a hospital-based wellness program including a spousal bereavement program. Volunteers, who themselves had been widowed for at least two years, provided help and support to t
