Daily Excerpt: I Love My Kids, But I Don't Always Like Them (F. Bagdade) - Introduction

Image
excerpt from I Love My Kids, But I Don't Always Like Them by Franki Bagdade Introduction              T he sound of your newborn baby crying for the first-time echoes in your brain forever. During the many months leading up to the birth, you dreamt of who that boy or girl would be, what they would look like and how it would feel when they became part of your family. Then suddenly, in a one moment frozen in time, that vision became real and alive, in the form of a helpless smush of a baby . “I got this.” I was confident, and maybe even a little bit obnoxious, as a second-time mom. My almost two-year-old was on a tight sleep schedule, slept through the night consistently and was a pleasure. I told anyone who would listen, quite smugly I might add, that my first child gladly played by herself, while I happily scrolled through this new phenomenon called Facebook , answered emails, talked on the phone and read books. In fact, I often felt guilty complaining to my husband that I had

Daily Excerpt: Parenting in a Pandemic (Bayardelle) - Bouncer (Crowd Control)

Image
The following excerpt comes from Parenting in a Pandemic , an award-winning book by Liz Bayardelle. Although the pandemic is past, thankfully, at least for now, some of the topics in this book are generic and apply at any time. Chapter 3: Bouncer Parenting is filled with many moments of intense emotional connection. Other times you get to watch your precious little flower unfold as they learn new things and master new skills. There are other times when it’s really just crowd control. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that parents should be as engaged as possible and attempt to make every moment into a learning experience, but show me a parent who swears they’ve never just wanted their kid to sit quietly for a few minutes, in one room, without wrecking anything and I’ll show you a darned liar. Newborns are stationary for a few blessed months, but after that kids are irritatingly mobile. Babies crawl everywhere and possess a mystical ability to find the single solitary lego left on

Book Review: Parenting in a Pandemic (Liz Bayardelle) by Literary Titan

Image
Parenting in a Pandemic  is the book we all needed and for which we never dreamed we would have to search. Bayardelle breaks down a tremendous amount of information in a short, well-organized, and engaging read. I highly recommend Bayardelelle’s guide to any parent looking to navigate the waters of parenting in this pandemic while waiting patiently on a return to what may be our new normal. 5 stars Read the rest of the review on Literary Titan .  Read more posts about Liz Bayardelle and her books HERE .

I suppose it is hokey associating Labor Day (the day to honor workers) with the labor of childbirth, but, heck, it ain't called "labor" for nothing. Any woman who has gone through it can tell you that it is a lot of work. Ironically, my daughter's birthday is today, Labor Day. Giving birth during the Labor Day weekend meant that her doctor was out of town, but we both survived. Though I tried hard to make it into the regular work week, she was having none of that, and after 12 hours of negotiation on the date, she won. So, happy birthday to my Labor Day (now working) girl. It seems appropriate, then, to share an excerpt today from Lessons of Labor by Julia Aziz, a social worker and three times a mother. She knows something about both kinds of labor.  REMEMBERING THE BEGINNER’S MIND   About a week before my second baby’s due date, I woke up in the middle of the night to the same menstrual-like cramping that began my first labor. Excited at 3 a.m. in the morning, I wo
