A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: About Asking a Traditional Publisher to Re-publish Your Self-Published Book

Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's topic addresses a topic that comes into my in-box on a regular basis, at least once or twice a week: a self-published author (either thought self-publication would provide more control and money or was unable to land a traditional contract) does not like the self-publication results and would like a re-do, i.e. start over again with a traditional publisher/contract. To cut to the chase, this is the content of the typical response I send to these queries: Thank you for your submission. Some of it is somewhat accurate, but many of the claims, while not necessarily false, are generally de-contextualized. We have friends and colleagues who have self-published books. While some of them are very nicely laid out and well-written, most can be easily discerned as self-published because of the quality. More specifically, when might an author consider hybrid publishing as the best option? Here are some possible answers to that question. Publishing Timeline It takes considerable time to find an agent and then to find a publisher. If there is some urgency to your need to have a book out the door, say, for example, an upcoming event in the next 8-12 months, but you want a quality, traditionally published look to your book, hybrid publishing might be your best option. Higher Royalties Typically, traditional publishers pay 8-10% on net. They need to recoup their investment. H

Ever wonder how books get to be accepted for publication? There is often more to any author's story than non-authors and not-yet-published authors would image.  Yes, of course, every publisher has the normal channel of proposal reading and acceptance based on the quality of the proposal, the "fit" of the book, the quality of the writing, and the perceived marketability, typically based on the author's platform. But...some books come into being in some other ways. Here are a few from the MSI Press e
