A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Building Mailing Lists for Marketing Your Book

It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.

Today's topic is about mailing lists. Wait! You mean that authors need mailing lists? You bet they do! Nowadays, a great many readers expect direct interaction with authors -- not with publishers. And the best way for an author to establish and maintain this relationship is through a newsletter and through targeted mailings, one of the best ways to promote and sell your back. Those require mailing lists, which are a must for all serious authors.

So, where can you get mailing lists?

  • Build your own. This is the best way – most economical, most effective, longest-lasting.

·       If you have a website or blog, it is easy to build your mailing list by having an opt-in link to mailchimp or other mail service right there where you do all your business.

·       If you display your book at an exhibit, e.g. the American Library Association, you should get a list of people who visited your display and want to be on your mailing list. If you exhibit through us, we will send you that information.

·       Whenever you hold an event, collect names and email addresses for attendees.

·       Do the research. Names and addresses of librarians, organization directors, and the like are online. It just takes a long time that way You can also see if Dee, who does our lists, is available for hire. (Just send us a query: info@msipress.com.)

  • Buy or rent a list.
        • Most professional associations have lists for sale. They are not always pricey, but often they are, especially if only for one-time use.
        • There are companies that will research categories of people and sell lists. Comparison shop here; there can be vast differences in cost and in quality.
  • Participate in a cooperative e-blast. These are available through IBPA and other associations. In the response, you will get a few more names to add to your mail list.

Bottom line: Serious authors who hope to make really good sales gotta bite the bullet and get that list of targets.

Lesson for today's Tuesday talk: Buy or build, a mailing list is very much needed.
