The
Most Important Lessons
In
this book, we have talked about 363 ways that you can help enhance what your
child learns in the classroom, but we also hope that you have learned that
inside the school walls is definitely not the only place where learning takes
place. Here are a few things we hope you see a little differently now:
● that
there are teachable moments everywhere when you know what to look for;
● that
often it is the questions that matter more than the answers;
● that
practicing can be fun;
● that
setting a good example is an easy (and possibly the most effective way) to get
your points across;
● that
having a plan and being organized can solve so many problems and completely
avoid many others;
● that
not everything works with every kid, but there will be something that works for yours;
● that
making what she learns relevant to her own life greatly increases the chances
that she will understand and remember it;
● that
teaching something to someone else is the highest form of learning;
● that
good communication with your child’s teacher is not only helpful, but
necessary;
● that
tests and grades are not the only measure of what your child knows;
● that
growth toward a goal is just as important as accomplishing a goal;
● that
praise (like true success) must be earned;
● that
your child needs you to guide her and set rules and follow through even when it
is tough, even when it is very tough;
● that
only you and your family can figure out what is best for your child (Don’t
worry about other families and other kids; just figure out what matters most to
you and stick to it);
● that
giving your child more responsibilities feels better to them deep down than
giving them more video game time;
● that
trying new things is worth the risk;
● that
kids need free time, down time—avoid overscheduling their lives;
● that
helping your child to become a good reader (not someone who sounds good reading
out loud, but someone who understands and connects with what she reads) is
probably the most important skill you can help your child develop; and
● that
spending time with your child is invaluable. Play. Sit. Cook. Clean. Read.
Laugh. Walk. Drive. Explore. Invent. Just do it together!
