Book Jewel of the Month: From Deep Within - Reviewed by SLK on Amazon

What is a book jewel? A sometimes-overlooked book with remarkable insight and potential significance. Starting in August, we will share near-daily, as possible, reviews of the monthly book jewel - short, succinct reviews that can be read in 1-2 minutes with links to the reviewer by reviewers whose words are worthy of being heard and whose opinions are worthy of being considered. Sometimes a couple of minutes contains more impressive thought than ten times that many. We will let you decide that.

This month's book jewel is From Deep Within by Susan Lewis, Ph.D., J.D.

From SLK on Amazon:

I highly recommend Susan Lewis’ book. “From Deep Within” is exactly where her perspective and insight emerge. Susan is very open and honest in her personal life’s journey, as well as in her career with her clients/patients. She gives the reader a clear and vivid picture of the challenges and successes, predictability and unpredictability in the life of a forensic & clinical psychologist.

This book is a true reminder to maintain an open mind and to be sensitive and empathetic to the struggles that others are experiencing in their fragile lives when living with mental illness and/or substance abuse issues -- that we may or may not be aware of. It gives a whole new meaning to the saying “walking in someone else’s shoes”.

The author’s empathy, vulnerability, and sincerity are apparent throughout the book, and are especially highlighted in the last few pages. Her humanness shines through the dynamic and intricacy of her relationships. I thought she handled her clients with the utmost respect and care, while trying to balance reality, sound judgment and professionalism in the most difficult situations.

I have been fortunate enough to attend one of Dr. Lewis’ educational seminars, and have learned an immense amount from her. I am grateful that she has shared her knowledge and personal experiences with us. She “tells it like it is” , which is what you want in a book of this nature, and exactly what is delivered.
