Tip #72 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley & Trombly) - practice reading words

Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

Hidden Treasure

Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.
Charles Swindoll

Playing “Hidden Treasure” is a perfectly fun way to practice reading words. Try making cards of:

      words in a story that your child is about to read for the first time so he can practice them before encountering them in the story;

      particularly difficult words in a story that your child is having trouble with;

      sentences with those tricky words in them so that he can practice the words in context; you may even try putting the word alone on one side of the card and a sentence containing that word on the other for reference if the word alone cannot be read;

      reading words his teacher has provided you;

      words similar in pattern (beginning letter[s], vowel sounds, rhyming chunks at the end) to words he is learning to encourage him to apply new word knowledge to other words; and

      challenge words for more experienced readers.

Many other subject areas, too, can be practiced with this fun game, such as spelling, math, and vocabulary words from other content areas like science and social studies.
