A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: More Magic Numbers, This Time for Social Media Marketing

It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.

Following up on last week's magic marketing numbers post, we figured we would share some more interesting numbers. These are current stats for social media marketing. Of course, as with anything, some percentages will differ for authors, depending upon their orientation, length of time on a platform, number of followers, and the like. The figures below are general.

1. Of social media, blog posts, written regularly, are the best source for sales, with as high as a 12% source of royalties (vs 1% for eblasts, bulk mail, and print ads) when authors maintain an active blog with strong content. Other social media platforms can support the blog by linking short tweets to the longer blog posts.

2. Tweets and posts alone fall into the 1% group, but they build the author’s reputation and platform and can push the blog posts from 1% where interaction is low to 12% return where interaction is high.

3. Authors who cannot blog regularly or have difficulty managing the technology, could hook up with a few bloggers and provide them guest posts regularly. That 12% is a valuable asset.

Bottom line: Commit to a regular presence on social media wisely; follow the path where returns are the greatest!

The Tuesday talks reflect real discussions between the management of MSI Press LLC and our own authors or those would-be authors who come through our doors but don't make the cut--yet. If you have a topic that you would like addressed, leave the question in the comment section. Chances are, in our 22 years of publishing first-time and experiences authors, we have had a conversation with one of our authors that we can share with you.
