Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

Begin at the Beginning: KWL

The things I want to know are in books.

My best friend is the man who'll get me a book I haven't read.

 ~Abraham Lincoln

Perhaps the first step in understanding informational text is to start even before you read. How can you do that, you might ask? The KWL Method is one commonly used in elementary classrooms. It is usually done for one particular subject that a child is going to read about. Use a piece of paper turned sideways with two lines dividing it into three vertical sections as follows:

K= KNOW: Your child writes down (or you can write for a younger child) what he already knows about the subject. Write down everything, whether or not it actually is correct.

W= WANT to know: In this column, your child records his questions about the subject. What does he want to know?

L= LEARN: While reading and/or after, in this column he jots down the things he's learned. After reading is done, he can also look back at his "K" column; was each "fact" he wrote correct? If not, cross it out or edit it.

If there were any unanswered questions, encourage him to find the answers to them even if they were not in the book. Perhaps you can sit down together and look on the Internet or take a trip to the library for another book.

The three parts in KWL help set the stage for comprehension by getting him thinking and predicting before he even begins to read. Now, when he actually does read, he will have a purpose for reading beyond just getting it done. He will become an active reader. He will be reading to see if his knowledge was accurate, if his questions will be answered, and for what he can jot down that he learned. Having these purposes for reading greatly increases comprehension and, as we've learned, if kids feel successful at something they tend to do better.
