Tip #136 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley, Trombly) - movie reviews
Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.
#136
Be a Movie-Reviewer
You can have anything you want—if you want it badly enough.
You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish
if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.
~Abraham Lincoln
You’ve probably told your child that when she grows up she can be anything she wants to be. In activity #135, your child needed to pretend to be a moviemaker. Today, allow her to try to be a movie-reviewer in an activity that is sure to help increase writing skills in a motivational way.
Together, read some movie reviews in the newspaper. Discuss some of these:
● How the review was written;
● The intended audience;
● Length ;
● The story elements covered (Idea #84);
● Beginning and ending paragraphs;
● Whether a synopsis helped (or would have);
● How and where opinions were included;
● References to other movies;
● Whether it had a rating (number of stars); or
● Whatever else you feel is important!
Now have her choose a favorite movie. Challenge her to write a review of it and give it an overall rating. She should support her rating with details. Should others see it? How can she tell her audience about it without giving too much away? If it is a recent movie, she could even send it into the local paper for possible publishing! If she does, don’t forget to help her revise and edit it before sending.
Variations:
This activity could even be done with a favorite book, game, or magazine.
