Tip #201 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley, Trombly) - Body Math
Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

Body
Math

Few things interest
children more than learning about themselves. Use this to your advantage to
increase your child's math skills. Below are some ways to practice math and
have your child learn cool stuff about her body:
● It
is said that you are as tall as the length of your arms from fingertip to
fingertip across your chest. Help your child measure herself and see if it's
true for her. Then, have her measure you and the whole family. If it does not
hold true for someone, use subtraction to find the difference.
● Have
you heard that your feet are as long as the area between your wrist and your
elbow? Help your child measure both and let her calculate if it's true for her.
If not, subtract to find the difference. Don't forget to have her measure you
or others in your family.
● How
tall is your child? Measure her and then figure out how many more inches or
centimeters she'd have to grow before she is as tall as dad, mom, etc. How
about calculating how many more inches she would have to grow to be 6 feet
tall?
● Tell
her your height and have her figure it out in inches. (i.e. 5 feet 4 inches =
64 inches) Then try the other family members.
● Show
her how to take her pulse. (On the side of the neck is usually the easiest for
children to find.) Count her heartbeat for 15 seconds. Challenge her to find
the number of heartbeats she would he have in 30 seconds, 45 seconds, one
minute, all day…
● Ask
her to run in place for one minute; then, have her check her heart beat again. Try
having her compare her running heartbeat to her heartbeat sitting still. How
much faster is the running heartbeat than the sitting-still heartbeat?
● Encourage
her to watch a family member and count how many times he or she blinks in 30
seconds. Challenge her to calculate approximately how many times he or she
would blink in 1 hour, all day…
● Which
bone is longer: her thigh bone or lower arm bone? Estimate the difference then
measure and find the actual difference.
The amount of math you
and your child can do together is only limited to your imagination. I bet she
can think of more math to do related to her body. Don't forget, many of the
activities from above can be graphed! (Another good opportunity to practice
graphing.)
The
Children's Book of the Body by Anna Sanderman and Ian Thompson
is a great body book for younger children. How
the Body Works/100 Ways Parents and Kids Can Share the Miracle of the Human
Body by Steve Parker is a great way to introduce this topic with older
children.
