Caturday: Meet Moo, the Un-Cat

Moo, personality plus, cleaning his paws, without a worry in the world

All cats are unique. No two are alike even if they are the same breed or from the same litter, Like people, But Moo is particularly unique.

MOO was trapped as a feral kitten on the streets, TNR'd, and delivered to a shelter for adoption, but nobody wanted him. Not even the shelter, where he was so frightened that he did not move from one spot in two days, urinating and defecating on himself, not eating, and trembling non-stop. They called the TNR liaison and asked her to take him back and put him on the street, that he was not adoptable. Instead, she called me.

He was just a scared kitten, about 12 weeks. He had no happy space of his own, no toys, no chance not to be on display. We put him by himself in our cat room, with toys, trees, food, water, and litter. All his own. We intruded only to refill and clean dishes. He began to explore and to play with the toys. Then, we invited super friendly, giant cat (but young) Bear into the cat room, and Moo instantly imprinted on him. Followed him all around the cat room and out the door. That was a year ago. Moo is now friendly with all seven other cats, but Bear is still his big brother and best buddy.

Moo is definitely different from your average cat. In fact, he is anything but a cat! He looks like a cow, runs like a deer, squeals like a pig, eats like bird, and is quick as a fox and sharp-eyed as a hawk. No mouse dare approach our house. Our other cats, now domesticated though once feral, are actually afraid of mice. Not Moo. One move, and the mouse is history. (I think the word is spreading to the fields because we have fewer mouse visitors these days.)

And Moo is a lot of fun. His fear long in the past, he runs up to all the people in our house and stretches, flashing his belly for a rub, but more than a rub, he treats people like animals and wants to play with them. Jumping over them, running around them, butting into them. Games, games, games. Moo would play all day, and it is hard to walk away when he is so intent on involving his people in his games.

Meet Moo's mates in the forthcoming book, Raising Happy Cat Families by Luna Norwood.

Book Description:

Think you can’t herd cats? Think again.

In this heartwarming and practical guide, Luna Norwood draws on years of hands-on experience integrating feral, rescued, shy, aggressive, and fearful cats into large, peaceful feline families. Raising Happy Cat Families challenges the myth that cats are solitary and aloof, showing instead how—with patience, compassion, and "whisker wisdom"—even the most unlikely cats can bond with each other and with you.

From building trust with traumatized cats to managing social hierarchies and facilitating peaceful cohabitation, Norwood offers real-life stories, tried-and-true techniques, and gentle humor. Whether you’re introducing a new kitten to your current household or helping an older rescue feel at home, this book will help you turn your collection of cats into a loving, cohesive family.

– Cat lovers
– Rescuers and fosterers
– Multi-cat households
– Anyone who’s ever wondered, “Can my cats really get along?”
