A Great Caturday Resource for Owners of FIV Cats

Image
Blind Cat Rescue has written and shared on its blog a wonderfully helpful article for owners of FIV+ cats. (Our 4 yo FIV+ cat, Bobolink, is pictured above. He gets along well with our other five cats, and in four years, none have been infected by him. It is very unlikly that this would happen -- encouraging for people who would like to adopt FIV+ but are afraid. No fear! Read HERE ! For more Caturday posts, click  HERE . Just a picture for Caturday

Image
Isn't it amazing how sometimes just a picture can brighten a day. Here, Intrepid shows how he earned his name. Always curious. Always fearless. Always wanting to be wherever the humans are -- and sometimes above them! Yep, he liked to help change light bulbs. (We lost him to lymphoma a few years ago, but his intrepid spirit remains.) Feral Cat 6: Jack, A Caturday Case for Those "Untamable" Wild Street Cats

Image
This is a series of Caturday posts on the topic of taking in  feral cats .  General information (from previous posts): For a few decades, we have rescued feral cats. In fact, with only one exception, our "domestic" cats have been ferals that we brought inside to join other ferals, already domesticated, as part of a bonded cat family. Right now, we have five cats (alas,  Murjan , the single non-feral cat we had, died from cancer last fall, and  Intrepid , closely bonded to Murjan, died three years ago from the same kind of cancer, and, most recently, Snyezhka , who had been valiantly fighting three kinds of cancer, died from a saddle thrombus, probably related to her chemotherapy but, of course, no one is going to suggest that and it really does not matter since knowing exactly what caused the reason for her death won't bring her back). All five of our feral cats get along pretty fabulously -- and they also got along well with the three predecessors. Of course, all of th

A Caturday Surprise

Image
Last Caturday, I made the comment on a post by Animal Friends Shelter in Gaza, Palestine, on X/Twitter that one of their cats looked like my late Murjan , shown above, hugging me (he was a hugger and a communicator). In response, the staff sent me a note and a video (such a nice surprise): Animal Friends Shelter on X: "@msi_press I qm so sorry for Murjan, he is in a better place now and will never forget your love. Today we made this video special for you and for Murjan hoping you like it 😻 https://t.co/4oZTNkI0ig" / X (twitter.com) They did this out of kindness and did not ask for a donation; later, I learned that they do not have enough food for all their cats and have to spread it out. If anyone feels like donating, here is where you can do it: PayPal Acc : Donate.AFScats@gmail.com or https:// paypal.me/DonateAFS?coun try.x=IL&locale.x=en_U And if you can, do not forget other shelters that are also hurting for funds to support their animals. A Caturday Post: Simone and the Vet

Image
I have to start out by saying that our geriatric cat, Simone (age 16+), a street rescue at the age of two, has a great vet, but no vet is all-knowing or always right. Ten months ago, Simone developed a cyst on her back. It filled and drained, filled and drained. Then, it just filled, and her vet drained it -- twice. She told me I could drain it at home if it got too back (bigger than the size of a golf ball), but she did not want to do surgery. Eventually, as could be expected, the cyst, in its drained state, became infected. An antibiotic injection helped, but the infection did not totally disappear. Orbax did no good at all. The vet did not want to remove it surgically because of Simone's age, but having to clean a pus discharge every two hours just did not cut it as a long-term solution. I asked the vet what reason other than age she had for not removing the cyst; there were none. She thought that Simone would not survive surgery because she was so passive during her exams. Wh

Caturday: Annoying Cat Behaviors

Image
I came across this very interesting post recently:   The most common annoying cat behaviors, explained (msn.com) . Seemed like a good topic for a Caturday. For sure, these are the kinds of things we all wish cats would not do -- scratching furniture, peeing outside the litter box, and escaping to the outdoors, among others. Good explanation and advice in the article. A couple pieces of advice missing, though, that I have found helpful for those escape artists: (1) build a catio (it is an alternative outdoors and, for most of our cats, it suffices, and (2) leash the cat and go for a walk (our Murjan was simply impelled to the outside and so loved to go for a walk that he would sit in front of the drawer with his leash and demand "mwout" over and over until he got his leash and the door opened -- and then he was off exploring. He wanted "mwout" the day before he died -- and spent his leash time looking for dark places where he could lay down for his final rest. (No, w

Caturday: Unusual Cat Behaviors

Simone (middle) and Wooper (right) would like to take Murjan (left) for a walk.   Happy Caturday! I hope you enjoy the picture of two of our cats trying to take a third for a walk. Beloved Murjan crossed over the rainbow bridge last year, but the picture still makes me smile. A Question and Partial Answer for Caturday: What Can Cats See?

Image
We had a cat, Murjan, who seemed to be going blind. He seemed to walk into objects upon occasion that did not have anything to do with motor control. He would look intently at people talking to him. Yes, he was social, but it also seemed like he was trying to make them out. And it was different from cat staring , which is generally a sign of affection. So, I was a bit concerned. Unlike with people, the doctor could not tell if Murjan could see. The physical structure of the eye looked okay, but other than that, there is no visual acuity test for cats -- yet. So, we never did find out. So, recently, when I came across this very interesting and in-depth article about cat vision, it seemed appropriate to share for Caturday since I doubt that I am the only one asking if my cat can see and how well. Here is the article: What Colors Can Cats See? (Note: the article talks about more than just color -- worth reading.) For more Caturday posts, click  HERE . Sign up for the MSI Press LLC news

Cats in War in Ukraine
