The Story behind the Book: How to Argue with an Atheist (TL Brink)

Image
This week's book back story features How to Argue with an Atheist by TL Brink. from the editor -- TL Brink is a professor beloved by his students, winning best professor awards. With a profession based on logic and fact-finding (and at the same time a Christian), TL found a new way to talk to atheists (and he had many students who fell into that group) that differed from the traditional emotional and mystical approach: through logic. His book is a tour-de-force clearly based on countless successful conversations with atheist students. Through his book, he hoped to reach a larger audience. I believe he has. The Story behind the Book: He's a Porn Addict...Now What? (Overbay & Shea)

Image
From the co-author, Joshua Shea -- I never planned on writing a book like this when I was a kid. I knew I was going to be a writer, although I was shooting for screenwriter or at least staff writer at Saturday Night Live. But there it was, my first book, under my name, published by a real company. “He’s a Porn Addict… Now What?” wasn’t the humorous, heartfelt fictional tale I thought would make my name in the world. It was both a memoir and self-help book geared toward the partners of pornography addicts, co-written by Tony Overbay, a licensed marriage and family therapist who was one of the first people to invite me onto his podcast to speak about my former addiction and journey into recovery.   For most people suffering with the disease, it’s a secretive, shameful place and you feel utterly alone. And like any other addiction, the people around the addict get sick, too. My first book, a self-published memoir about the depths of my addictive journey, introduced me to the concept of

This week's book back story tells the tale of He's a Porn Addict...Now What? (Overbay and Shea). From the editor -  Joshua Shea had read and was taken with Healing from Incest (Henderson & Emerton, in which an author and her therapist, with permission from the State of Nebraska psychological ethics board, teamed up to tell a compelling story). He and his therapist, Tony Overbay, wanted to do the same. We saw a very positive aspect of these book parallels and offered a contract. From the paperback came a hard cover, e-book (the most popular version of this book), and an audio book. Paperback copies of this book can be purchased at the   MSI Press webstore   at 25% discount with coupon code FF25. The Story behind the Book: Helping the Disabled Veteran (Joanna Romer)

Image
This week's blog post is the next in the series of book back stories and is the story behind Helping the Disabled Veteran (Romer). From the editor -  Little did Joanna know that this would be the last full book she ever wrote. (She published ten books with MSI Press.) In fact, the final chapter was written by Mary Ann Raemisch, one of our copyeditors who had edited Joanna's previous books. Joanna was in the process of revising the book (originally written on the broader topic of all veterans, then deliberately targeted toward one of the more forgotten groups of vets -- those who ended up disabled from their war experiences) when she died unexpectedly. The revision was complete except for the final chapter. A colleague of Joanna was able to find and download the book from Joanna's computer files. I approached Mary Ann, knowing that she was familiar with Joanna's style, given her extensive experience copyediting Joanna's work, and asked if she thought she could emu

The Story behind the Book: Good Blood by Irit Schaffer

Image
This week's book back story features Good Blood by Irit Schaffer. from the author -- Irit Schaffer is an author, speaker, physical therapist and healer in California. Her healing journey began in childhood where she was mesmerized by the stories of her father who had supernatural encounters with miraculous healing. Her dad journeyed through the turbulence of the Holocaust, was a Russian POW, imprisoned, suffered gunfire, gangrene infection.  There was no medicine to be had and yet he found a resilience that would change the course of his life and through his stories, hers.    Irit says “I would always ask him how he could tolerate the bullets taken out and not scream, and he would say that he had good blood. I would ask him if I had good blood, and he would laugh.”  That story set in motion Irit’s never-ending desire to understand the mind /body connection and the resiliency and resourcefulness of the human body mind spirit, called “Good Blood”.    Irit went on to achieve a Mast

The Story behind the Book: GodSway (Keathley)

Image
Today's book back story is about Diana Keathley's book, GodSway . From the author --  GodSway: My Anecdotes with God as a book has had its own journey. Obviously, the interactions with God were special when they happened. I treasured them in my heart even as a child. They continued to happen the more I pursued Him, and I cherished each encounter. The idea of a book didn’t cross my mind, however, until one year when I was prepping my Spanish Immersion 4 th - graders for Spring testing. They were confusing the word anecdote with antidote. To illustrate the difference I used a short true story from my own life about when my family had a house fire. [No spoiler alerts here. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happened!] At the end of the story, the children were quiet. One wide-eyed girl expressed what they were all thinking. “ Ms. Keathley, did that really happen?!” In the middle of my matter-of-fact answer that yes, it was all quite true, I felt that nudge from the S

The Sory Behind the Book: How to Argue with an Atheist (Brink)

Image
From the publisher --  The story behind How to Argue with an Atheist   by TL Brink -  Professor Brink, a popular professor at a southern California university, sent me a query out of the blue. I had never met him. But, his proposal was intriguing in that it provided a counterbalance to a book we had published earlier, Blest Atheist (Mahlou). The previous book had provided argumentation through experienced emotion. Professor Brink offered a parallel, leading to the same conclusion, through logical argumentation. Interestingly, I never got to know the popular professor as well as most of our authors because there were no snafus. (Yes, most books have a snafu here or there.) Copyediting was quick; he had provided clean copy, well organized, well written, well edited, something that warms the cockles of every editor's heart. Of several proposed cover designs, he actually liked the one shown here without modification.  What a breeze! The book was produced in what seemed like a flash.
