The Story behind the Book: A Woman's Guide to Self-Nurturing (Romer)

Image
I wish I knew more about all the thinking and emotions that went into Joanna Romer's A Woman's Guide to Self-Nurturing . Unfortunately, after publishing ten books with us -- all of them respected and many of them beloved -- she passed away quite unexpectedly. One of her co-authors found her on the floor when she dropped by; Joanna had died of a heart attack, with no one else around to help. After producing two books on bereavement, which reflected both her personal experience and her research as a professor of journalism, Joanna asked if we would be interested in publishing a book that she felt compelled to write -- a book for women, focusing on their mental health and comfort, based on psychology and spirituality. It some ways, it seemed like she, not all that long ago divorced, was actually wanting to write a book for herself and then share it. Usually, we tell would-be authors to move their own needs aside and focus on the needs and interests of their readers. However, Joa

Excerpt from Divorced! (Romer): Don't Let Your Ex Make You Miserable

From Divorced!  by Joanna Romer Don’t Let Your Ex Make You Miserable! While many divorced people want to discuss with their ex “what went wrong” with their marriage, you may find yourself coming to dread such conversations. Going through my second divorce, I told my therapist, “I feel awful after I talk with him, and I don’t know why!” The therapist’s reply: “So, don’t talk to him.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “I have to talk to him—“ “Why?” he interrupted. “You’ve got a lawyer. Everything’s pretty   much hashed out anyway.  So, don’t call him.” I was doubtful. “What if he calls me?” “Don’t answer.” Even though it seemed initially like the cowardly way of handling things, I soon found that I felt much better without the bi-weekly conversation with my ex, where we’d been trying to discuss our differences. After two weeks of not talking to him at all, I was noticeably more cheerful. As my therapist said, everything important had already been work

Daily Excerpt: A Woman's Guide to Self-Nurturing (Romer) - How to Figure Out What Pleases You

Excerpt from A Woman's Guide to Self-Nurturing by Joanna Romer - How to Figure Out What Pleases You You know what your mother likes; ditto your daughter and your best friend. But do you really know what warms your soul? What single thing or combination of factors is necessary to soothe your inner being? Often we don’t know—a family reunion may bring tears of joy to your sister Gillian, but it leaves you cold. Your next door neighbor Amy thrives on frequent trips to the mall, but you’d rather drive to an out-of-the way antique store and shop for a “find.”  Every woman is different, and we make a mistake when we tag along on someone else’s pleasure jaunt thinking it’s ours too (unless of course our purpose is to give that person a treat). If our goal is to please ourselves, we need to plumb to the bottom of our consciousness and discover that special something that brings us joy. The good news is, the older we get the easier it is to figure this out, simply by the process of

The Story behind the Book: Divorced!

Image
As editor, I will have to tell the author's story of Divorced! Survival Techniques for Singles over Forty -- or at least as much of it as I knew about -- since the author, Joanna Romer passed away a few years ago, in the middle of writing her tenth book. Joanna had written several other books prior to Divorced! Survival Techniques for Singles Over Forty, include the award-winning books, Widow and The Widower's Guide to as New Life! These books were based on her experiences after her husband, Milton, director of Stand by Me , died and prompted by them.  While she had not been divorced, being a widow had some of the same circumstances as being a divorcee, especially some of the same emotions and insecurities -- ones that she share with other women in similar circumstances. She wrote to help shape her own thinking and emotional understanding; she wrote even more so to help other women in the same cirumstances. Joanna's books have always been popular, even after her death. I

The Story behind the Book: How to Get Happy and Stay That Way (Romer)

Image
This week's book back story features How to Get Happy and Stay That Way by Joanna Romer -- a perfect Christmas theme! from the editor -- I will have to tell this story since Joanna, alas, is no longer with us. She passed away suddenly from a heart attack a few years ago. Still, her books are loved and still sell.  This particular book proposal caught my attention immediately. Happy is the name of my cat, and here was an author wanting to tell the world how to get him. Oh, right, she meant joy, happiness, peace -- not my cat! At the time, Joanna was exploring some of the happier, kinder, and kind-to-self themes, writing several books in that vein. Maybe she was looking for joy. Maybe she had found it and wanted to share it. In either event, the book is certain to help others find the joy in their lives.
