A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: MSI Press Affiliates

Image
It is Tuesday. Time to tall turkey. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Today's topic deviates from our usual "conversation" topics of pragmatic and technical advice for authors and would-be authors, as well as those trying to be their own publishers. Instead, we want to bring to you information about a new MSI Press program that has the potential to help authors directly in significant ways: MSI Affiliates.  An MSI affiliate is an author whose book(s) the MSI Press editorial staff has accepted for inclusion in its webstore as a "friend" of the press. The high quality books of affiliates benefit in a number of ways: They are listed in the MSI Press webstore. While MSI

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Where do our weekly topics come from?

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's topic answers a question we are often asked: where do our weekly topics come from. The answer is: from several sources, including seminars/workshops that MSI Press, our authors, and The Literacy Center have conducted in the past; questions posed by MSI Press authors to MSI Press editors (brief answers are included here, but complex answers are provided to MSI Press authors on the Author Hub); questions from query letters and subsequent communications with those writers interested in publication; podcasts and other blogs on the topic of publishing (we might disagree or expound or expand or otherwise inform); personal experience of

Authors in the news: In Memoriam: Jim Ostdick

Image
It is with sorrow that MSI announces the death of affiliated author, Jim Ostdick. Jim lived in San Juan Bautista and interacted with MSI Press staff and participated in activities of The Literary Center, a local outreach arm of MSI Press. He was especially close to Carl Leaver, MSI Press typesetter from 2003-2021. They both are missed. HERE is the biographic information published in the Hollister Freelance , the local paper.  For more posts on Jim and his book, click HERE . MSI Press Staff Matters: Anniversary of Carl Don Leaver's Death

Image
Two years ago today, Carl Leaver, typesetter, graphic designer, and co-founder of MSI Press LLC , passed away after five too-short months of cancer of unknown primary . We all want a legacy, no matter how humble, and Carl certainly has one. To wit, Dozens of MSI Press authors loved his book covers -- and, in a kind way, they reached out to him in his dying days to tell him so. He edited one book, Overcoming the Odds , and co-authored another, Intrepid . Books almost always outlast us. He was Dad to four children (or seven, depending on how you count the three who moved in with us as teenagers) and three grandchildren, two of whom lost both their grandfathers in 2021, and daddy to a couple dozen cats; his very special cat, Intrepid, who preceded him in death, is buried with him. His name is engraved on a brick, shown above by Br. James, at the St. Francis Retreat Center in San Juan Bautista, reminding a number of people of him as they pass over his stone. His obituary is the second mo

Cancer Diary: Cancer Treatment in Nigeria?

Image
This is a slightly different kind of Cancer Diary post. It is not sharing information but rather asking for it.  One of the MSI Press staff, who lives in Nigeria, sent a note yesterday: "Sadly, I have some bad news to share with you. My mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that has now spread to the bone to cause  Spinal Metastasis ,  resulting in   a   fracture of the right femoral neck with the femoral head tilting into varus position and surrounding bone marrow and joint effusion. I was wondering if you know of any US-based not-for-profit organisation that helps women in Africa (especially in Nigeria) in this kind of condition with medical, counselling or financial assistance?  We are in need of medical assistance to manage my mother's condition. I was hoping that you can connect me with any such organisation to provide us with the best treatment options available. The medical expenses associated with my mother's condition have been quite significant,

Daily Excerpt: Easter at the Mission (Sula) - Life at the Mission Gift Shop

excerpt from Easter at the Mission (Sula) -  Life at the Mission Gift Shop The people I know best, those who take care of me, can be found at the Mission Gift Shop. There, I have quite a big staff. (You have heard that dogs have owners but cats have staff, right?) My staff is a group of wonderful people. Mary Anzar was the first person I met many years ago when I was called to my mission at the Mission. Benito Garcia used to work at the Mission Gift Shop but now works at the parish office; we are still attached to each other so I regularly walk over to the parish office to see my Benny. Stacey Gentry supervises my staff, takes good care of me, and most important, serves as my official photographer; you will see her beautiful pictures in this book. I have known Kaleena Scargill for many years. She used to clean the church, I would follow her around, and she would take pictures of me that ended up in some of my previous books. Marie Reed is very kind to me, and she makes sure that anyo

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: How Books Get Published -- Anecdotes from the Trenches

Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Ever wonder how books get to be accepted for publication? There is often more to any author's story than non-authors and not-yet-published authors would image.  Yes, of course, every publisher has the normal channel of proposal reading and acceptance based on the quality of the proposal, the "fit" of the book, the quality of the writing, and the perceived marketability, typically based on the author's platform. But...some books come into being in some other ways. Here are a few from the MSI Press e

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Publishing Contortions as the Industry Becomes Ever More Digital and the Significance for Authors

Today's post discusses a seismic change in the book publishing industry. More than a decade in the making, digital publishing has moved to overtake print publishing, whether it is online journals or ebooks published in advance (and sometimes in lieu) of paperbacks. That move is propelled by a growing younger population that has grown up digitally and the greater ease for authors to self-published in digital formats. That, however, creates a quandary for publishers. AI compounds the rate of change by bringing a new component to writing. Take a look at this article about one of the most established and respected magazines:  National Geogra

Caturday in Indonesia: Meet Sweetie, the Institute's Cat

Image
Like all cats, Manis (Sweetie) likes her chin rubbed. [with Betty Lou Leaver, Managing Editor, MSI Press] There is something special about cats. They appear and suddenly "own" things and people -- and the people go along with it quite well. Recently arrived in Bandung, Indonesia, one of the first members of the "staff" of the institute where I am doing sone consulting/training work that I met was "Sweetie" or Manis in Bahasa. She comes to classes and sits at the front among the students. (And, though technically feral, she allows handling, true to her name.)  For more Caturday posts, click HERE .
