Daily Book Excerpt: Forget the Goal, the Journey Counts (Stites) - My Second Miracle

My Second Miracle

It was during this period of my life when I had the second of my automobile “experiences” with my new Volkswagen Hatchback. One night, around 11:00 p.m., I was driving home to Arlington from a party in D.C. I had had a few drinks, and for some reason I took a winding blacktop road through the residential section instead of the freeway, my usual route. At the top of a rise I saw a curve ahead, and realized I was driving too fast. I hit the brakes twice. The car suddenly fishtailed violently, and I lost control. As it went off the road to the right and up a slope, I gripped the bottom of the steering wheel, bowed my head, and closed my eyes. The car catapulted over a 10 foot embankment, rolled over, landed on the roof, and then rolled over again slamming into a bank. I must have been unconscious for a short time because when I opened my eyes, the road was lined with cars, and a policeman was hurrying over to me. As I forced a door open and stepped out, a man ran up shouting, “I’m a doctor, lie down, lie down!” I took a few steps, and winced at the pain in my leg. The cop asked me what happened. I answered simply, “Driving too fast.” After many questions, my walking a straight line (one sobers up in a hurry after an acci dent like that), and filling out forms, they took me home. I opened up the gallery the next morning, but by that afternoon the pain in my leg was intense, so I went to the hospital emergency room. The x-rays showed the break. They put on a cast, and I bought some crutches. The following day my young son David and I went to see the car, which had been towed to the Volkswagen dealership. At the accident, the cop had mentioned that there must be special reinforcement over the driver’s side because the roof wasn’t dented even though it had hit on that side rolling off the bank. At the dealership, a mechanic told me that hatchbacks had no special reinforcing over the roof on the driver’s side, just one bar across the front. Yet the passenger side was crushed down almost to the seat level, while the driver’s side was only lightly scratched, not even dented! David asked, “How is that possible, Dad?” I answered, “I was being looked out for, Dave.” What could not have happened did happen. My Spirit Guides were watching over me.
